The motorman in the old uniform looks a whole like the man identified as motorman Ralph Rungo in the December 1956 issue of Transit magazine (lower left). According to rest of the article, he had more than 40 years on the job in 1956 so maybe the Good-By is for Mr. Rungo with 50 years of service.

The official uniform for both M/M and C/Rs was a dark blue long (four in hand) tie and a ligh blue shirt. The uniform in the photo seems to be the pinstripe to which I have often referred and according to an IND old timer was called “indigo pinstripe.” Although the thicker “hickory stripe” which is most often seen worn by mainline RR engineers was allowed, the pinstripe was the preferred uniform for B of T and NYCTA M/M although it seems that the hickory stripe overall was more popular among IRT M/M. |

Another piece of info relative to train crew uniforms is that the badge number were coded by number with IND badges started with a number 1, BMT badges started with a number 3 and IRT badges started with a number 6. Wh the gaps between the starting numbers I never found out. The original IND M/Ms’ badges were the same design but did not have numbers at all. Another oddity is that BMT and IRT badges had the division stamped under the number but the iND badges did not. By the time I started as a C/R in 1966, the TA seemed to have abandoned the diviaion number codes probably in anticipation of the BMT/IND Chrystie merger since my C/R badge started with a number 1 even though I was on the BMT and my M/M’s badge started with a number 7 which didn’t fit any of the previous patterns at all. In late 1966, the TA started issuing uniform caps and new badges to all the plat C/Rs although I did manage to retain my original punched tin C/R badge. Even after thetA designed better looking badged for its C/Rs and Bus operators, the M/M’s badge was still the punched tin type. Also while, the official TA uniform code required the badge to be attached to the cap, for some reason it was BMT tradition for the M/M to not wear badges and in all my years of railfanning I never saw a BMT M/M with one. In keeping with BMT tradition even after the merger, I considered myself a BMT M/M ans so never wore mine either. There were also two types of M/Ms’ caps allowed. One was a black silk cap looking like a cross between a fisherman’s cap and a C/R cap and the other was the traditional RR style cap that was supposed to match the stripes of the rest of the uniform. I opted for the RR style cap and preferred the 2 tone one with the blue peak and striped top I believed originated by the Kromer Klean Kloth Kap Company, at one time a well known manufacturer of RR apparel. |

I had several hundred employees who took pride in their jobs. One in particular spent 63 years changing brake shoes. He took pride in the fact that none were ever ground mis-adjusted or improperly installed. He was actually insulted when he turned 80 years old and I offered him a light duty job. Pride is not measurable but the results are. |

Yes but you should know that you should NEVER post again unless you are 100% sure your post didn’t go through. Not receiving acknowledgment that your post was successful is not proff that it didn’t go through, as you have now learned. Instead, you should reload the site index in a separate tab to see if your post is there or not. If it’s not there and the site is otherwise behaving normally, then you should repost. |
