Buttigieg is a moron (on-topic)

Posted by Dave on Sun Jun 19 07:41:49 2022

His flight last week from DC to NYC was canceled so he drove. He's pissed that the flight was canceled and said his department has authority to enforce action against airlines that do not sufficiently maintain consumer-protection standards, potentially requiring them to hire more staff.

What an effin moron. Drive? Hey numnutz, ever hear of Amtrak? They only have a few dozen trains between the two cities every weekday in each direction.

A poster child of the morons in the Administration.

If he needed a car in the NYC area, it is justifiable. Rental car prices in Manhattan are insane, like 150/day or more. They are far lower at the airports.

I wonder what the travel statistics are between the 68 square miles of the District of Columbia and a similar chuck of the five boroughs. How many per day by Amtrak. How many per day by air? How many per day by highway? I suspect that the highway figure is the highest, but I cannot find figures to back it up.

As a Cabinet secretary he undoubtedly has a security team, not from the Secret Service but more likely from the DOT. They need time to review his travel arrangements in advance.

Do you know where in the NYC area he was going? Of course he wouldn't rent a car if his destination was Manhattan. But you didn't say that.

Also, suppose he drove his private car to the airport, and then his flight was canceled. What now? Take your car home, and then make you way into DC for a train? Or drive to the MD suburban station? Or just say, screw it, I'll drive?

The trade-offs between plane, train, and car depend on any number of factors. Between NYC and either the DC area or the Boston area, I've done all three, depending on the particulars.

He would have been foolish to drive if his destination were midtown Manhattan. Better to drive to New Carrolton or whatever, and take the train.

Dave probably assumes that his destination was easy to reach from NY Penn. He could be right or he could be wrong. The news article I saw doesn't say.

Wouldn't they need the same time to review his road travel arrangements? It's the same thing.

Either way, I wouldn't imagine that's how it works. It's the government. They have preset options that come with logistics in place for such last minute changes. For whatever reason, driving is option number 2. Or at least it was in this instance.

You would think that in light of climate change that the Secretary of Transportation would set an example and take the train as his first choice. It would appear to be yet another example of government rules and policies not applying to those that make the policy.

I don't fault him too much for driving after his flight was canceled. There are logistics issues that may have made that the best second option once he was already at the airport. I do fault him for not initially planning to take rail.

It all depends. No one knows his origin and destination points. Some pairs of points in the DC and NYC areas are best done by rail, some by plane, and some by driving.

And of course security issues may complicate everything as well.

So you don't know either, do you?

I almost certainly have way more expertise on the topic of traveling between the NYC and DC, or NYC and Boston, metro areas than you do. I've done it easily 100 times (probably more) over the last 50 years. And I've determined the best method at different times was plane, car, train, and bus. It all depends on the two end points.

If, and I have no special knowledge, Secret Service has preference for auto over rail, Buttigieg may not have been offered a choice. That said, of course I prefer that he use rail, but SS may think it easier to protect a small auto convoy as opposed to a scheduled train.

His return logistics can't be different if he drove/

This is pointless speculation without more facts.

- We don't know where he started from.
- We don't know where he was when he learned his flight was canceled, and whether he had his car with him there or not.
- We don't know where he was going in the NYC area.
- We don't know where he was returning to at the end of the trip.

I can assure you from my many trips to DC and Boston that these all make a difference in one's decisions.

OK.

But to what extent? Suppose end-to-end via train is 5 hours and plane is 2.5? (Maybe a slightly extreme case for DC to NYC but still quite possible for some itineraries.) Would you still say so then?
