Reduced fare OMNY starts sometime in June

Posted by Allan on Tue May 17 16:18:45 2022

The MTA has announced that Reduced Fare for OMNY will start in June (no specific date give).

https://new.mta.info/fares/reduced-fare/omny

At first it will be limited to contactless cards (debit/credit), smart devices etc).

A R-F OMNY card will be available later this year and you can "register" online to receive notifications about it.

When does my transit benefit card that I have pre-tax salary deducted to get to go OMNY?
I just got a new card and it has no chip, still have to use it in MVM or TVM use the pre-tax dedcuted cash.

I assume you keep the MetroCard until they establish OMNY refill machines.

And then there are people like me who pay through pre-tax payroll deduction AND are entitled to a reduced fare.

I've given up trying to figure out exactly what they'll do. But it sure looks like an OMNY refill machine has to be part of the mix.

I forgot t mention that the NY Transit Museum store in GCT has the OMNY card.

It costs $16.00 ($11.00 in fare value, $5 for the cost of the card).

The store DOES NOT have the capability to add value to the card.

"I just got a new card and it has no chip"

Lou, that is very surprising. Almost all cards issued by banks these days have at least the chip on the card (some still don't have the 'contactless' feature).

I would suggest you contact whoever in wherever you work or if there is a direct contact with the administrator of your Transit Benefit and ask why are they still behind with the chips.

I understand. I had one of those many years ago, of course back then the chips weren't even thought of yet.

I do think that by now the pre-tax benefit cards would have been upgraded just as a matter of course.

HALLELUJAH!! At last my question has been answered, and YES I can use my contactless card to pay my (reduced) fare. No need to ever visit a MVM or TVM again, and no need to 'pre-pay' by loading fares onto a separate card. Anyone with a smartphone can do this too, and the MTA notes that farecapping will be automatic, so people who can't afford to lay out the full cost of today's monthly Metrocard can still benefit.

I don't often have much praise for the MTA, but they've got a winner here.

P.S. A contactless card is not the same as a chip card. All current credit cards have a chip, but only some are contactless today.

Given that MVMs don't let you do it, it would have to be online somehow, I would guess. I'm also not going to Google it.

The new fare gates have been deployed. All they had to do in the subway is add readers to the existing turnstiles - which they did. On buses they have added card readers by each farebox.

Contactless debit and credit cards, smart phones (with online wallets) already work at these new readers (most of the times

Sorry to hear that but by 2024 (most likely), you won't have a choice. At some point during that year, expect the MetroCard to be phased out completely.

"Where is the MTA Omni Vending machine?"

My guess is that the machines are still being constructed and may be affected by various parts shortages or supply delivery delays.

You register the card on the OMNY site.

Then you can either link it to a debit/credit card and set it for an auto refill for specified (you set the amount) amounts when it gets down to a certain level OR you can do a refill when you want to.

Go to the OMNY site and read up on it http://www.omny.info

That seems stupid since you can just use a CC directly. The OMNY card is only worthwhile if you could refill it with cash.

Not necessarily.

A lot of people (like myself) do not want to use a CC or DC directly at the turnstile. We would rather feel that we 'better control' over our fare payments. The OMNY card provides that.

While I would have no real problem refilling an OMNY card online, I would rather do it at a machine or an authorized vendor (if you can find one whose employees know how to do it) because then I just add money when I am already in the subway as I need it (I do this with my R-F card now).

The OMNY card is only worthwhile if you could refill it with cash.

Or you are entitled to a reduced fare (so the card has to say you are a special person), or you don't have a credit card, or you don't want to risk your credit card being snatched out of your hand as you move to pay on entry.

My credit card refunds fraudulent transactions made and can be cancelled and replaced for free. So I really don’t care if it gets snatched. Can OMNY do that?

This thread already establishes that a special OMNY card will not be necessary for senior citizens and people with disabilities.

If you don’t have a credit card, then that falls under the use case of “refill it with cash,” making online refills by credit card impossible, so it only supports my point that such functionality is useless.

Regarding doing it at a vendor or machine: that just furthers my argument than an online auto-refill is a redundant feature.

Why do you think that using an OMNY card gives you better control?

Since the only credit or debit cards that will active the turnstiles are CONTACTLESS, they do not have to be in your hand in the first place. I keep my contactless card inside a pouch on my belt, and I just wave it near the reader when I make a purchase, and I plan to do the same when OMNY is activated for me. And of course there are many other ways someone can avoid having to expose their card to theft.

For people using their phone, it's probably in their hand already, since I've observed that smartphone devotees are pretty much using it 24/7.

My wife and I have had 4 separate fraud attacks on our credit cards. We haven't lost a penny but we sure have lost a lot of time.

I missed that. How does the system know to deduct $1.35 from my card and $2.75 from yours?

"How does the system know to deduct $1.35 from my card and $2.75 from yours?"

You have to register your Debit or Credit card on the OMNY site (once the R-F option is added in June). That is the only way the system will know that your card is eligible for the $1.35 fare. If you don't register then the system will deduct $2.75.

The OP and the link from the MTA didn't make it clear how it would work. I imagine you would set up an online account and link your credit cards.

OK, then my card isn't physically special. But it is still special in the sense that the system can go to a central database and in under a second it can agree to deduct $1.35 from my account instead of $2.75.

Yeah, it's all pretty amazing, but then this is 2022, so high bandwith/high tech processes are no longer all that rare. The system can read your bank card number, check to see if it's registered as a reduced fare account, and then unlock the turnstile for you. After that it can send the $1.35 charge to your bank; but before that it will check to see if you've hit your 12 ride cap for the week, and if you have, there will be no additional charge.

This (fare capping) is the big plus associated with registering your card or you iphone or whatever device you're carrying. Anyone who prefers to use a standalone OMNY card is welcome to do that, but it seems like a suboptimal choice to me.

I can think of a very narrow reason. If you have a transit card at work, and your employment runs out, you need to unload your remaining credit onto an OMNI card.

And again, my main credit card has a large credit limit. I don't want anyone to see where I keep it and definitely don't want to take it out of my pocket in the subway. I keep my metrocard less well protected.

ANS: NYCT already has proximity (Tap) ID cards for employees to enter MTA buildings. The NYCT ID tap cards are not for transportation, as it states on the face of the card. However, with the deployment of KRONOS time clocks through out the entire MTA system, those clocks will accept a proximity tap card.

The present employee ID Metro card is used to swipe at turnstiles, buses, and at MTA KRONOS time card clocks. A replacement for the employee, and retiree (Pensioner) Metro ID card will follow the format of the present Employee tap card.

Employees/Retirees will begin to see new transportation pass/KRONOS replacements in late 2023.
