I have the belief that because they received 3 to 4 major overhauls of flooring and picture window seals as well as 100% stainless construction, they did survive the acid car washes better than other cars. I did see the inners of a pair that was in process of break apart at SIMS in Newark a couple of years back. The skin and floor structure cracking I saw indicate they really should not consider going over 40 years on a car again. They were lucky the 44s needed to leave first. When they skin the cats you see what the TA misses. |

In just one year you could see the difference being mostly outdoors vs underground. All the underground on the E and C no doubt helped extend the R32 lifespan. |

Problem was, in the summer months, the A/C struggled to keep up in the hot tunnels. Probably one reason they went to the Eastern Division, mostly outside once leaving Manhattan. I don't know if that was just an R-32 problem, or on all the SMEEs that had A/C installed during GOH. |

A/C was overworked. In the summer the E terminals, both Parsons E, and WTC were brutally hot. NYCT has a policy at terminals to conserve energy. "Partial close down". A train at a terminal will close all doors but one(crew door) in each car. I think someone said the reason the R32 went to the J instead of Broadway BMT was to avoid Montague tubes. |

At this point things could last indefinitely if there was an effort. I am sure the efforts were swayed toward the newest cars. Not the old subterranean R-32s. Or 42s. It’s human nature |

I think someone said the reason theR32 went to the J instead of Broadway BMT was to avoid Montague tubes. Apparently (this has been mentioned here), the Hurricane (Supersotmr?) Sandy repairs to Montague no longer allowed R-32s or $-42s to traverse Montague. So there was that to consider. I guess if those types needed to get to CIY, they had to use the |

Muni supposedly custom built a clearance mock up to test out dimensions for the Breda cars before they were built. But, after early deliveries a couple of doors were knocked off because of insufficient clearance from the platform at the Castro Street Station. |

Since the Q and QB never operated at the same time, there's a good chance they re-signed some R-32 trainsets from one to the other to meet schedule requirements |
