One of my favorite R 40 pics is shown here laid up like a sleeping snake in the middle track between 30th Ave & Astoria Blvd. Acela on the Hell Gate viaduct completes the scene in the backround.

If that's an R44, this same setup was common a little over a decade later on the A & C lines. The whole Cadillac luxury vibe of the R44s made the A Express seem like such an upgrade over the local C and its loud R32s.

And the R44s made people forget quickly the loud R10s which once dominated the A line for so many years. They got a reprieve along with many R16 cars when they had to be taken out of storage when the R46s had to have their trucks replaced due to cracks but eventually got scrapped. Before the R32s got to run on the C the last R10s and R27/30s preceded them in the tradition of having the oldest cars in the system running on that line.

It's an R-44. The R-46 had a small rectangular door under each headlight. I presume it was to allow access to some electrical equipment. The R-44's had a smooth front.

And the CC before that. My last trips on the R1, R4, R10, R30 and R32 were on the C/CC.

As for the R44/R46 being the "Cadillacs" of the system, maybe when they were newer, but now they are that old beat up Caddy in the driveway that your dad would take around the block once a month and everyone knew it from the sound.

R-44's were roaming the (D) lines when I took that photo. One way you can tell an R-44 from an R-46 is the front roll sign. The R-44's had a white circle around the letter, while the R-46's did not.

And I thought of one more, Woodlawn. I went to Lehman for a year and while I've been to BPB countless times I never went past. There's nothing but dead people at the end!

Most of the lines I rode out of need, not railfanning. Most of it when I was much younger. But my first time at 135th/Lenox was a few years ago when I was riding my bike in New Jersey and my partner for the day lived in The Bronx and we parted ways there. My plan was to just ride from there through Central Park and catch the Q at 57th (pre 2nd Ave) but once I'd stopped that was it.

"Sufficient".

I'm not trying to be a wise ads either. That is the rule. The t/o makes the decision and is responsible to put enough on so that the train doesn't roll away.

No "smart ads" inference taken. So it a judgement call on the part of the T/O. That might leave the T/O subject to discipline if the train rolls away & supervision disagrees with his definition of "sufficient"

Damn spell check. I didn't notice "ass" became "ads" (it did it again!).

But exactly. Make sure it doesn't roll away.

Handbrakes and their application by some t/o's piss me off. One tight handbrake is better than 6 "pussy" handbrake. Pain in the ass to release because it doesn't fully release and you have to get your reverser into the teeth to bring the counterweight all the way up. With a good tight handbrake, the counterweight comes all the way up upon releasing.

The new techs have automatic parking brakes. And they work too! As much as I don't like them, they would have saved me 2 hernia surgeries. That's what tight handbrake can do to the applied.

When I was a kid, I originally thought that the R-40Ms were the same as the R-42s (I didn't know about contract numbers back then, so I made up my own names, so the 40Ms and the 42s were part of a class I called "A/C" (for obvious reasons, that was before I found out that the last 100 Slants also had A/C, I never rode the 10 R-38s that also supposedly had it)). But they did look very much alike. Now I know that the 40Ms had thinner striping in the blue bands than the 42s, but that was too subtle for me as a kid.

The placement of the controller. When I broke in on the R143 and later on the R160, my fingers and right hand were killing me while operating it.

I also didn't like the extra step in climbing up and down off the train. My feet had no coordination for whatever reason.

Awesome set of pics!!3 thoughts:

1) I love the pic of the D in a summer downpour

2) The 1988 pic of the K train was 1 week before the route was eliminated. When did they issue the notices of the Archer service changes? I actually didn't see anything until about mid-week (Approximately Dec 7th)

3) I notice that the letter "J" in the last pic is quite different from the "J" on the R42s- those Js had a much shorter hook on the letter. I don't think I ever rode a post GOH J/M/Z with an R40M on the lead or last car..

Yes. The controllers on the R44/46 were centered.

The reason for the controllers by the cab window R143/160 is because of the screens. IIRC one for the train consist and diagnostics, the other for CBTC.

It's not bs. He is right.

Management knew the IRT would see little to no CBTC or OPTO for years to come.

They had big plans for the L line. So the control was placed to the side.

Since then they have gone back to putting the master controller where it belongs.
