[PHOTOS] R-38's - The Post R-32 Fleet

Posted by Bill Newkirk on Sat Dec 4 14:06:00 2021

St. Louis Car Co builders photo. Obviously different looking from the R-32's.

Assigned to the (N) in this undated photo, passing by "shoe fly" work on the Sea Beach line
image host

At the end of a mixed consist at the Brighton line's West 8th St station, things were getting backed up a bit. Does this still occur today ? (July 1969)
image host

Next three photos of some action at the West End line's 25th Ave station.
It's the end of the PM rush hour and the R-42 (RR) is on the conga line for layup at Coney Island Yard. (July 1978)

Up close and personal ! (July 1978)
image host

Time to slap on the zoom lens and catch an R-32 (QB) waiting it's turn to enter Coney Island yard. (July 1978)
image host

At the 20th Ave. station, I caught this consist leaving the 18th Ave. station. Take note of the movie marquee on the Loews Oriental theater. (Sept 1978)
image host

Wide angle street view at 86th St. and Bay 26th St, the 20th Ave. station is nearby. (Sept 1978)
image host

I heard of R-38's on the (RR) and made a photographic pilgrimage to Queensboro Plaza where I tolerated the sub freezing temps to get this photo. (January 1979)
image host

R-38's made it out east and plied the rails on the (M) line seen here on the Williamsburg bridge. (March 1979)
image host

Taking advantage of the curve at the Myrtle Ave. line's Seneca Ave. station. This station was always a favorite spot for rail fans.(August 1979)
image host

At the Sea Beach line's Ave U station I guess on line for layup after the AM rush hour. (October 1979)
image host

The 80's weren't kind to the R-38's being tagged with graffiti but at decades end it was time for a general overhaul that would rebuild them and add air conditioning. Seen here at the 2nd Ave yard, the rehabbed R-38's will be placed on their trucks and off to Coney Island yard before being sent to their final destination. (September 14, 1987)

In the pre-Air Train days, approaching Howard Beach station. (April 12, 1990)
image host

At the signal tower at Liberty jct, this set is only a few stations away of their final destination of Lefferts Blvd. (September 1990)

An early "Train of Many Metals," I see: an R-38, followed by an R-40M, followed by an R-32, all in the same train. Wasn't this around the same time they started mixing and matching R-12 through R-36ML cars on some IRT ("A Division") routes?

Yes, I was told that a supervisor from the "A" division was sent to the "B" division and he replicated the mixing of car classes on the "B" division.

IRT at least kept GE and WH cars mostly separate (except the R33 singles).

Did they do they same here ? R42's would not have mixed with any GE cars if that were the case.

Ha. So that explains it. Must've been for the purposes of offering at least one set of A/C cars, no, whether R-40M or R-42?

Just about my favorite cars and mostly in Brooklyn. Great combo. Very artistic. The movie marquee is gray for 1978

Although this wasn't the case, those Borgaschmord trains give the impression that yard crews didn't bother to sort out the cars after making yard moves and just left them as hodgepodge mixed bags.

Awesome photos! Thank you for sharing.

I remember these days well. As a railfan I disliked the mixed consists. It appeared to have been done (or close) when I first started riding IND lines (around 1975), but I remember this practice well on the IRT lines.

The Yard Master calls the moves.

The Yard Crews make the moves which the Yard Master directs.

When making yard moves, the crew doesn't know which cars are "inspections" or "holds" or upcoming inspection cars being put together onto the same consist or just building a train to go out on the road in service, or even for transfer to another yard. Main Shop transfer for instance.

It is not the job for the crews to "know". It is their job to "do".

Yep. Thats the way it was done in freight service at Oak Pt. Yardmaster gets a "switch list" as in go to a particular track & switch out the cars on the list to make up a train. The yard crews just follow orders.

The R38's ran on pretty much every line in the B Division except on the Canarsie and Jamaica Lines.

Yes, they did run on the M only in the Brighton Line Days.

From my memory on the following lines they made rare appearances: D,RR.

As for the Q, just when there was a big water main break when it ran to Brighton Beach from 207th St. But not on the all BMT version of the Q to my knowledge.

They haven't made an appearance on today's N/W combo.

I was commuting to 8th Ave/50th St at the time of the water main break that also spewed asbestos. I took the D/Q to 53rd/7th instead and I remember the signs were orange Q/6th Ave/Brighton and was almost all R38.
