Question about LIRR E-Ticket

Posted by Jeff Rosen on Mon Oct 18 14:50:31 2021

This morning I was going from Merrick Station to Penn for a very fast covid test for a background job on 23rd Street. Although they say to activate the E-ticket as the train is approaching I always wait until he/she comes to my seat. The conductor scanned the bar code on my phone before Jamaica. After Jamaica when they collect tickets again he saw my phone and said "I got you earlier". After validation the ticket stays valid for two hours. Coming back from the covid test I get on the train at Penn and check the e-ticket wallet and that ticket still had 8 minutes on it. So I showed the conductor THAT barcode and it registered. All I had to do was buy a cheaper ticket from Jamaica to Merrick for the second half.
My question is: If the first conductor scanned both times, before and after Jamaica, would I still be able to use the barcode coming back with 8 minutes on it? In other words, does the scan cancel the barcode??
Hypothetical question and story of course as I would never think of cheating the MTA out of money!! (Yeah, right!!!)

It should've in theory. In a paper ticket, the conductor would've taken the ticket after the initial seat check (since you weren't transferring at JAM for another train west)

They always punch twice with a paper ticket. Anyway, it only saved me $2 as the senior ticket is $7 from Penn and $5 from Jamaica.

"They always punch twice with a paper ticket."

It all depends on the ticket collector, which always drove me crazy. One ticket collector would act as if you were an idiot for offering the ticket the second time, and then the next would treat you like an idiot for not offering it. Worse, the collector before Jamaica might punch you twice without seat checks and then be relieved after Jamaica (or they'd change "the split") with the successor collector wanting to see a ticket with one punch. Then there were the times I wouldn't get punched before Jamaica and then after Jamaica the collector would get angry at me because another LIRR employee didn't do his job. The total lack of consistency is one of the things I don't miss about not using mass transit.

Could be as simple as the handheld device could not have been uploading or downloading the data between your trips.

It would appear there's a shortcoming in the algorithm they are using for detecting a valid e-ticket.

It obviously does not distinguish between the direction of travel, when the conductor initially scans the ticket. From your description, it appears they use only elapsed time to check the ticket's continued validity. We don't know whether your ticket would have been valid for the return trip, had the conductor scanned it between Jamaica and Penn Sta on your initial trip. That experiment might give us more information as to where the problem lies.

I discovered a similar situation with the bus transfer algorithm for Metrocard. One can take a round trip on a single fare, provided different routes are used for the going and return trips.

The old paper ticket procedure was immune to a conductor's omission.

The paper ticket procedure wasn't immune to a savvy commuter. Back in the day, when LIRR ten trip tickets offered a significant discount and were valid for 1 year, a friend saved some money on his commute from Flushing to Penn Sta. He kept 10 trip-tickets for Flushing-Penn Sta and Woodide-Penn Sta in his wallet. If the conductor wasn't able to punch his ticket between Flushing and Woodide, he produced the Woodside ticket. This was about 1/3 of the time. He also carried a Wooside-Flushing 10-trip ticket for the return trip.

Agreed.

The LIRR training and policy enforcement is extremely lax.

I don't miss taking it every day. I used to love taking it when I didn't NEED to take it every day. Now I can't stand it.

Tickety sweeps are also very sloppy. South Shore diesel train get a sweep out of Jamaica, but never again, no seat checks, and despite some rider turonver at Babylon, local passengers get free rides, or can ride on beyond ticket zone. The trains are not under-staffed.

100% in agreement.

Get on east of Jamaica (or Woodside on the PW branch): you have a great chance of getting a free ride. I see it consistently.

Oh yeah, I've seen it hundreds of times.

My daily commute for a long time was taking the PJ from Huntington to JAM, getting the Q44 to the Bronx.

And the reverse coming home. And upon getting the diesel train (I always timed it to get the diesel so sometimes I could go directly to Northport) they almost always didn't check the tickets.
