Question about LIRR E-Ticket

Posted by Jeff Rosen on Mon Oct 18 14:50:31 2021

This morning I was going from Merrick Station to Penn for a very fast covid test for a background job on 23rd Street. Although they say to activate the E-ticket as the train is approaching I always wait until he/she comes to my seat. The conductor scanned the bar code on my phone before Jamaica. After Jamaica when they collect tickets again he saw my phone and said "I got you earlier". After validation the ticket stays valid for two hours. Coming back from the covid test I get on the train at Penn and check the e-ticket wallet and that ticket still had 8 minutes on it. So I showed the conductor THAT barcode and it registered. All I had to do was buy a cheaper ticket from Jamaica to Merrick for the second half.
My question is: If the first conductor scanned both times, before and after Jamaica, would I still be able to use the barcode coming back with 8 minutes on it? In other words, does the scan cancel the barcode??
Hypothetical question and story of course as I would never think of cheating the MTA out of money!! (Yeah, right!!!)
