[PHOTOS] Station Identifications Needed

Posted by Bill Newkirk on Sat Sep 18 08:16:10 2021

Ok all you 3rd Ave el buffs. Time to put on your thinking caps and see if you can identify where these photos were taken. (All photos April 1, 1955)
Photo A - Those gas tanks may be a clue. Station in the distance looks like an express station.

Photo B - Those buildings may also be a clue

Sure, must be from those stations but I named the first street visible.

Happy to help and keep up your great work.

There weren't Els on 7th Avenue, 5th Avenue or Madison Avenue.

Try again.

Looks like a pedestrian bridge crossing over the tracks. 34th St on the 3rd Ave. line?

No. B can't be 35th St station. The Chrysler building, the white one, is south of the position and that is 42nd St.

The Chrysler Building is west of 3rd Ave. If looking south it'd be on the right.

The Chrysler building is at 42nd and Lex. Looking SOUTH from the el at about 47th St and 3rd it would be on the right as it is in picture B, and it takes only half the block between Lex and 3rd.

My office looked straight at that side of the building. I've got time lapse video of the building's shadow being cast on the PanAm/MetLife building. I'd have to look for it. You could only see it at the winter solstice for a few weeks before and after.

The Chrysler Building is at 42nd and Lex but the building on the right of the photo is the former Daily News building at 220 East 42nd just west of Second Avenue. The apartment building at the northwest corner of 35th and Third in the photo still stands as shown in Google street. The white building at the end of the tracks is Manhattan House at 66th Street. As I wrote earlier, this view is north.

I'll have to look closely, or just see for myself and go there. Even before Covid I had retired from my job with the 31st floor view of the Chrysler building.

Everybody points out the gargoyles on the building, but did you know that in brick around one third to halfway up there is a ring of cars pictured? It is hard to see from street level as there is no clear view, except from 3rd Av in the mid 40s somewhere. It is the same level as the wings right before the final setback. Even with the clear view it is hard to see. It really helps to be looking straight across at it.

Yep. Barely visible from the street but really obvious when you are at eye level with it.
