Padron on Mon Sep 6 21:06:36 2021 Yeah, the 42nd Street Shuttle, with its rebuilt platform layouts at each end of the line (Times Square and Grand Central), will be back into the fold tomorrow at 5:00am Eastern on Tuesday, September 7, 2021.Viewed the ongoing work at both ends, with the most startling change at Times Square. Free transfer and exit signs towards 6th Avenue have been installed also for the "B", "D", "F" and "M" line. It is something else! -William A. Padron ["(S)"] |

Gates opened at 5:50am on Tuesday, September 7, 2021.Two R-62A six-car trains assigned in use... Track 1 = n/#1936-1933-1935-1932-1939-1955/n. Track 4 = n/#1943-1944-1947-1948-1908-1949/s. First train in service was on Track 1 leaving at approximately 6:00am from Grand Central to Times Square. Second train in service would follow on track 4. All middle seats in each R-62A car have been removed, with seats near car ends left intact. No more gap fillers at Times Square, leaving the ones on the southbound platform at Union Square-14th Street on the IRT Lexington Avenue Line (#4, #5 and #6 trains) remain as is. The bumper block had been shifted eastward (southerly) on track 1, which has been partially filled in, along with the former Track 3 completely filled in though on the new platform. Free direct transfer between the IND 6th Avenue Line ("B", "D", "F" and "M" trains) and the Shuttle platform is available, not ADA compliant. There are doors that can be closed in the passageway corridor when the shuttle is not in service between 12:00 midnight and 6:00am, plus gates on the IND platform level. And so it goes... -William A. The passage was built within what had been track 3 of the shuttle.The plan was to use a passage on the north side of the tracks conveyed via and underpass, but plans were changed a few months back because they realized tunneling under track 4 would require it to be taken OOS again. |

Back when the building on the northwest corner of 6th and 42nd was completed quite a few years ago, they said that a passageway in its basement would be used to connect the subways. Then silence for many years. So after all that, they didn't use that passageway. |

We already have 6 car links on the #7 line.We have 4 and 5 car links all over. If one car has a defect in any link, the whole set get taken out of service. Car Equipment likes linked cars because cables with the draw bar is much more dependable than the electric portions between the cars. So I understand your point, and I agree with it. But what we think doesn't count. I was just asking because when the shuttle was 3 and 4 car trains I did see linked cars. |

The best is that you can be east of 5th on 42nd and what you need is an 8th Ave train, and the weather is miserable, so you walk underground to 8th Ave.I work on 6th a bit above 42nd and it will be great to be able to catch the Times Square trains while staying dry. |

From other vids I see no switches between the stations, Does this isolate track 4 to the West Side IRT and track 1 to the East Side? What happens when one train has to be taken out of service? There is no place to lay up a replacement. |
