From then on, any bus made for Chicago had to have a "cherry" handle to open the doors in an emergency. (They look like a cherry tootsie pop).

Also more doors than most PCC's. Were the Green Hornets the longest PPC's in length ?

Yes. They were the longest single-end PCCs ever built at 50' 5". They had three sets of doors.

Due to their extra width, the trucks were installed a bit off-center to allow clearance for the wide cars to pass on existing tracks.

Thanks for confirming that the trucks were slightly off-center. Three inches or more?
I'm guessing these cars were built for a fixed conductor position forward of the center doors. I cannot find a roster diagram for them.
--
In later years in Brooklyn the separate narrow doors up front seemed constricting when wide-front-door buses appeared. Unless I am mistaken, streetcars designed in the 1920's sometimes had front doors without centerposts. If I ever again visit Branford, I'll have to note width of PCC doors vs. other cars in their collection.

Illinois Railway Museum has an operable Green Hornet.

I would further dispute the narrator's claim of "safe motor vehicles" as we kill 38-40kpeople in road accidents each year but very few in all transit/transport.

570 Green Hornets were sent to St. Louis Car Company and were stripped of all components, which were used to build the 6000s from 6201 to 6720 and the 50 singles. Only 4391 survives, alive and well, at IRM. I've ridden on it several times there.

The Green Hornets were rear entrance PCCs, the only time such an arrangement was ever ordered. The conductor was just inside and across from the rear doors, which he controlled. The center exit door had a treadle that was pushed out when released, while the front doors were controlled by the motorman.

Supposedly the motorman on that ill-fated PCC was told he would be going straight at 62nd Place, as they had just about finished pumping the water out of the underpass. As to why he ignored the flagman is unknown.

From memory, might want to check their site.
One CSL pre-war PCC, one post-war CTA PCC. Also several ancient Chicago wooden L cars, several CRT and CTA L cars and n IRT Redbird or 2.
If one has time, the other museum in South Elgin has one of the 4 experimentals built for CRT as it was becoming CTA. They look very much like the pre-war BMT Bluebirds. Both museums worth a visit--vastly different vibes.

"their site" refers to Illinois Railway Museum at Union. In addition, IRM also owns CSL 4001, built by Pullman in 1934, a streamlined car usually described as pre-PCC. A similar car was built by Brill in 1934, which presumably was eventually scrapped, as it no longer is listed in IRM's roster.

There were 50 single cars built from recycled Green Hornet components. They saw service on the Evanston and Skokie Swift lines, fitted with trolley poles. During rush hours, they ran in trains on the Evanston Express.

And they could, and did, operate with 6000-series cars. Their doors were closer to the ends of the car. Except during rush hours, they ran as single units on the Evanston line as a shuttle between Howard and Wilmette, and the fare was collected on the train. If you were continuing to Chicago, you obtained a transfer from the motorman.

IRM acquired most, if not all, of the CTA's private collection back in the 90s. This included Old Pullman 460 and Blue Goose 4021. From what I've been told, 460 still has its original wheels, which can only run on streetcar-style rails. I've seen it in one of their barns.

I suppose the doors in the singles were close to the cabs for OPTO fare collection ?

Too bad CTA did not buy the North Shore Electroliners in 1965. They would have been cool on the Skokie Swift, but fare collection on board would be expensive.

Correct. 2 married pairs and 4 of the singles had a shunt on the controlstand which allowed the operatorto change wiring such that they could run faster. I was on a CERA fantrip when George Krambles (CERA member #1 and a CTA official)took over from the assigned motorman, punched the button and we speeded up. Until BART opened, CTA had the US rapid transit speed record for a test run at 76.x mph.
