IND trains to 39 world fair

Posted by trainman on Thu Mar 4 20:09:16 2021

Would anyone know if any IND R1_R9 series cars were painted in a white & blue color scheme for runs to the 39 NY World's Fair temporary terminal?

I don’t think so - only the ‘64 Fair.

if nyct kept that track and terminal then high rise not town houses would line GCP service road.

I have only seen black trains. I bought a copy of a book about the IND World's Fair line.

No they were not. The only repainted cars were the BMT Q car rebuilds that ran on the Flushing Line.
They were repainted blue with orange striping.

Weren't the 7 line trains the color of the NY State flag?

And even then, it was only the new R-33 singles and the R-36s that were in that color. The R-=10s didn’t even get that scheme till after the fair.

Similar to present NYS license plates, though gold rather than orange, different shade of blue.

At an early age, from 1938 to 1941, I resided near the West End elevated subway. Along with regular BMT standards, on rare occasions, a BMT Blue Bird would appear. Once I had seen a white train with 1 or 2 blue strips. The strips formed a "V" where they joined on the front of the train. Would anyone have any information on this train? From an old 1939 World's Fair guide book, special E trains along with regular GG trains went to the Fair.

NYS license plates have gone back to close to what they were 12 years ago: dark blue letters on a white background.

NYS can't seem to make up their minds on license plate colors or is it just another money grab?

The Jersey plates are cheap. The prisoners made better ones. The blue ones from the 1980's still hold up. The reflectorized tan coating peels off after 10 years. I splurged on replacement plates for $11 about 10 years ago. Now the characters are no longer embossed.

To me it’s Cuomo’s ass print because the yellow blue plates came out when David Patterson was governor. The cash grab is probably another thing.
I think they claim the new plates are read better by cash less tolling.
And the last couple of years the yellow plates were defective and peeling.

Notice how they ramped up the concrete floor on thq Q's so the threshold plate would slide over platforms.

Thats how they were in revenue service. IIRC they were outfitted with lighter weight trucks so they could run on the Myrtle So. of B'way. With the 2nd hand trucks they sat higher, allowing the extension plate not to clip the platform when they ran on B division width platforms. I wonder if those extension plates ever clipped any ankles??

I have two personalized plates myself. One is my handle, which will celebrate 30 years on Monday, which still adorns my Jeep. The other honors the D train, a collector plate on my '69 AMX.

They were fitted with Composite trucks when they were transferred to the 3rd Ave. el. Because they sat higher than before, their roofs had to be chopped when they were sent back to the BMT.

For the first couple of years that the Qs ran on Myrtle there was no problem with the roof. The problem came in when new signal equipment was installed in the Dekalb Ave realignment and the new signal cables caused clearance problems.

The unfortunate problem with the Qs is that although one complete Q unit was restored as a BU, the museum never bothered to restore a complete Q unit to operate.

#1602ABC was set aside to be restored as a "Q" unit, but was threatened with scrapping. #1602C was saved and obtained by the TMNY and sent to Kingston, NY

The maximum traction trucks came off retired IRT Composite cars in 1950 when the Q cars replaced them on the 3rd Ave. elevated line. Even though they were lighter than the original Peckham trucks the Q cars were still restricted to carrying passengers only on the center express track. They were sent back to the BMT Myrtle Ave. line in 1957-58 after Steinway cars replaced them on the IRT as a labor saving measure since they were equipped with MUDC. However if they had retained their original Peckham trucks I don't think that they would have needed replacement at that time.

I would certainly call the color scheme before the latest one orange and blue, not yellow and blue. Orange and blue are the New York colors, anyway. Like on the NY City flag (colors derived from the former Dutch flag - orange as in William of Orange). But mainly associated with NY City, not NY State.

NYS is dark blue and gold, NYC is the blue and orange. Part of the Cuomo DiBlasio pissing match was the repainting of the MTA Bridge and Tunnel vehicles, all the new buses wrapped in the NYS scheme, stripes on new subway cars, even the band of tiles and divider stanchions in the tunnels....

The way it came down to me was that since the motor trucks of the Qs were at the #1 end it would have meant that at the point where 2 Q units were couples, the weight o4 4 motors would have been concentrated in a short space putting undue stress on the el structure. Now it’s highly possible that the motor trucks could have been moved to the #2 ends of the motor cars so that they would be a little more than a full car length apart at their closest but why that wasn’t done I don’t know. Then what the Qs were returned to Myrtle, the trucks from the BUs being scrapped could have been reinstalled but for some reason that wasn’t done either.

When Cuomo goes bye-bye, DiBlasio or his successor can change the gold to orange.

Stange that here is no gold on the front end of the M-9's.

Yes. The Q's were set up as motor-trailer-motor. The additional weight of the Q's also came from the steel bulkheading at both ends, in addition to the Composite trucks.
