Taking of Pelham 123-The book

Posted by TransitChuckG on Sun Jan 24 09:24:10 2021

I had read the novel many, many, years ago. I left it when I downsized and moved to NC.
I had the urge to read it once again and obtained a copy of the paperback from E-Bay.
I read the book yesterday and loved it ,again. It was interesting that in the novel they used the real names of the characters, but in the movie, they used colors for the 4 bad guys, The novel was little more descriptive than the movie, but the movie is still my #1 favorite movie. A lot of the lines for the book were used in the movie , of course.

I've never read the book. In fact, reading a book after I've seen the movie seems an unlikely prospect as I'm lazy by nature. Back to the movie, the producers made a point, at the end of the movie, to state that the TA gave no assistance in the filming. Obviously, then, the Lindsay administration had to lean hard on the TA to get some of the movie filmed against TA wishes. The single car operating through 14th St comes to mind as does the clearing of A2 track at court St. for much of the filming.

As you've read the book, did the C/R in the book make the same errors as to car length, weight and cost or was that just in the movie?

There were more characters in the novel. Garber was the Operations Lieutenant in the novel while Garber the movie character was Clive Prescott. At the end, Detective Haskins captured Longman as he came down a fire escape. Composite characters were used in the movie, something that is often done.

One of the errors I noticed in the book was the C/R referring to the key that unlocked the door controls as the “drumstick key” The proper term is “drumSWITCH” key sometimes even just shortened to switch key. It got that name because it was originally only needed to change the drum switches on the Lo-Vs and the R-12s and 14s. As for the TA giving minimal assistance in the filming, that was the result of a dustup between the movie producers and the TA upper management. I was at the time the command center console dispatcher in charge of the Lex Av Line and had made arrangements to actually sort of play myself in the movie as the actual command center was supposed to be used for the filming. The TA’s General Counsel placed certain restrictions on the movie company which the producers didn’t like so they figured that they would go over the GC’s head to the Chief Exec Officer for Operations and maintenance. The Chief exec decided whatever the GC said was perfectly OK and the GC was so annoyed tht further restrictions were placed such that the movie company was now no allowed to use any other TA facility other that the train and the tracks that had already been agreed upon. That meant that the movie company had to build its own “command center” as well as a duplicate Grand Central Tower. And of course I wasn’t able to be used either.

The TA must have backed off their stance of not allowing an actor to operate a train after The French Connection.

I remember thinking that was odd when I first saw the movie, that they made a point that the TA gave no assistance in the filming of that movie, when all other movies thank a zillion people and companies for their assistance.

The only reason I could think of for saying that was that the TA insisted on that disclaimer, for legal reasons, so they could not be sued in case someone decided to copycat the movie and attempt to hijack a train.

Second, it was blatantly untrue because the TA did lend assistance. Don Harold told me that he spent four months full time with the movie company on the making of Pelham 123 just after the movie was completed. I believe he is still around. Anyone know for sure? A wonderful and very personable guy with tons of transit memorabilia, who once gave me complete sets of bus transfers.

And even the conductor was an actual conductor named Bob Morrone. Supposedly the actor who was supposed to play the conductor didn't show up on the day they filmed that scene. Morrone was not credited.

There was no actor, C/R Bob Morrone was always supposed to be in the scene. One oddity was that the C/R was not wearing his hat even though it was required when the uniform jacket was worn. What happened was that during all the rehearsals, he kept his hat in his bag. When it came time to shoot the actual scene his hat was so crushed from being in the bag so long it was unwearable. At that point there was no time to send for a new cap so they let him film the scene hatless. Why they just didn’t let him remove the jacket which would have been OK, I don’t know.
