Two comments on the Cascade Tunnel.

- It replaced the first tunnel. It's not as though there are now two tunnels.

- One end is considerable higher than the other (IIRC the elevation they cite is the higher elevation). This greatly reduces capacity because in the uphill directions the engines have to work mightily and put out a lot of fumes that have to be cleared.

There was a thread on electric locomotives a while ago. This might be a good application as a capacity increase. Add on some electrics as a booster so that the diesels never have to operate at higher than an idle while inside the tunnel.

And on this date in 1969, The Jets upset the Colts in Super Bowl III. I remember that day; we were in Williamsburg for most of the afternoon at a Saturday School play rehearsal. We didn't take the subway; my father drove us.

1969 was a bad year for Baltimore, Jets beat the Colts, Mets beat the Orioles & the Knicks beat the Bullets in the semi-finals.

At least the Super Bowl was the 1968 season.

What was the biggest problem with the Budd SPV-2000's?

One major problem was the lack of adequate ventilation. After one year in service the interior of the cars were dark and grimy from the diesel exhaust.

From a mechanical standpoint, they were "orphans" in a sense. They were essentially buses on rails equipped with diesel engines, automatic transmissions and electric parking brakes. Metro-North had 10 of them, acquired from Amtrak since they didn't want them. They were fuel hogs with that transmission that sometimes shifted late, making for a noisy interior ride with a high revving engine in addition to their dingy interior appearance.
From what I was told, they were maintenance nightmares keeping that engine & transmission in tune. IIRC CR/MN got about 10 yrs out of them.
