From a mechanical standpoint, they were "orphans" in a sense. They were essentially buses on rails equipped with diesel engines, automatic transmissions and electric parking brakes. Metro-North had 10 of them, acquired from Amtrak since they didn't want them. They were fuel hogs with that transmission that sometimes shifted late, making for a noisy interior ride with a high revving engine in addition to their dingy interior appearance.From what I was told, they were maintenance nightmares keeping that engine & transmission in tune. IIRC CR/MN got about 10 yrs out of them. |
