The Great Northern Railway formally places the 2nd Cascade Tunnel into service. The tunnel is 7.79 miles long and at an elevation of 2,883.

The Budd-built SPV-2000’s which had been running on the Springfield-Hartford-New Haven Line are withdrawn from service. The cars were mechanically unreliable especially during the cold weather months.
