Two comments on the Cascade Tunnel.- It replaced the first tunnel. It's not as though there are now two tunnels. - One end is considerable higher than the other (IIRC the elevation they cite is the higher elevation). This greatly reduces capacity because in the uphill directions the engines have to work mightily and put out a lot of fumes that have to be cleared. There was a thread on electric locomotives a while ago. This might be a good application as a capacity increase. Add on some electrics as a booster so that the diesels never have to operate at higher than an idle while inside the tunnel. |
