Only on TV can the inside be a Toronto subway & the outside a NY subway (I'm in the window in my hat

Posted by Jeff Rosen on Fri Oct 16 14:10:03 2020

Here's a scene I did as an extra on the Netflix show Grand Army In a train at Church Av. When they showed the actress on the train it was an out of town subway car, I'm pretty sure Toronto as I heard they shot scenes for the show there. She then exits the car at the Church Av/MacDonald Av station!! You can see a very blurry me in a hat sitting at the first window to the right of the door. Only on TV or in the movies does that occur!!! (Video taken off my laptop)

There was a movieseveral decades ago witha fugitive running down the steps to Metro in DC (spy movie taking place in DC) butthe shot from the below showing running toward the camera is in Baltimore. IINM, back thenthe Baltimore subway did not operate revenue service on Sundays, so easy tomake a deal to shoot.

It reminds me of an episode of Law and order where a woman boards an R-38 train in Bkln, walks from one car to another, and the outside scene shows an IRT redbird passing in the tunnel. She does her deed on an R-40 and at some station in Manhattan I think W 4 St exits an R-32. Another Law and Order scene showed a passenger hit by an “A” train at W 4 St. The station was some sort of a PATH station with W4 St signs pasted on the columns and blue “A” decals stuck onto the sides of the PA cars. Some of the reruns of The Untouchables that are now showing on MeTV have shown trains of R-15s on the Flushing Line that are supposed to be prewar Chicago el cars. One episode of The Untouchables showed Frank Nitti being run over by a Chicago “subway” train that looked like a cross between an IRT World’s Fair car and an R-1/9. The first part of the scene looked like it was shot entering the IC/South Shore Randolph St terminal, however,he first true subway in Chicago did not open till 1943.

Continuity mistakes concerning mass transit scenes are nothing new and always will be there. Transit geeks and anal nitpickers (myself included) will always spot inconsistencies.
Case in point is the equiptment shown (and track positioning) in the chase scene in "The French Connection"
Without breaking it down frame by frame, check it out and see for yourself next time you checkout the movie.
BTW, it didn't matter, it still won best picture Oscar.

In the movie "Pay or Die" (1960?), Ernest Borgnine is a detective in Little Italy early 1900s going after "The Black Hand."

In one scene he is at Spring or Canal sts. on the east side IRT and gets pushed onto the tracks. There's a shot of him on the tracks and then a clip of an incoming train in a tunnel - you can make out the front destination sign reading "AA".

You know what's really funny? I was in that station for about 10 hrs for the shooting and never noticed the signs saying 2 & 3 lines in the mezzanine even though it was an IND station (Church Av). My son pointed it out to me today when we were watching. But it makes sense as it was supposed to be Grand Army Plaza since the fake high school was there. Being that it was an active station I wonder if it confused people. Probably not as it isn't considered a tourist stop!

If you're familiar with the West End line, you know that there are errors in continuity during the chase sequence. They even shot a couple of scenes in Ridgewood including the one just before the chase ends.

Do you know the police show Tommy with Edie Falco. She plays the police chief of L.A. yet it's shot in New York. I did a bowling alley scene as an extra (I got to bowl) where she meets the LAPD union president and it was shot at Astoria Lanes!! They used my car as a parked car (got paid extra for it) and they put California plates on it. If you watch the show you'll notice some stock footage of L.A.

I was an extra list T/D around the time the French Connection scenes were being shot and when I was working Met, they were using Myrtle for some of the scenes. Although the crash scene was supposed to be on the West End Line it seems that the Yd/Mast at CIYd couldn’t guarantee that a clean train of B Line R-42s would be available after each day’s AM rush, so the movie crew got what was there which includes cars signed for the N the day the main crash scene was shot.

Right when that civilian car smashes into Hackman's LeMans, the train directly above is an R-32 trainset.

Before Covid it was very easy. Hopefully things will get back to normal. I always advised people to first register with Central Casting, an 80 yr old company that even cast the Munchkins in the Wizard of Oz. One is technically employed by them even though they don't turn down anyone. It is free, however since the pandemic they haven't done registrations. Then the best way to get jobs is to subscribe to Casting Networks. I pay about $150 a year and in normal times before March I'd get about 30-40 email listings for my age range a day. Since Casting Networks has all your pictures and info all you have to do is click submit. When they give an age range it's basically what you can portray, not your actual age. I personally averaged about 1 or 2 jobs a week and the average pay was about $180. They also feed you with a buffet lunch (before covid) and snacks & coffee all day. This particular subway job at Church Av I got $207 ($15/hour + time and a half OT or $22.50 an hour) Union members (Screen Actors Guild) get more. It's very hard and expensive to get into the SAG but since production companies would rather pay the $15 so it's actually easier to get a job as non-union. I've actually known SAG members to lie and say they were non-union to get a job even though SAG prohibits members from doing so!!
