Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Ocean Ave. trolley

Posted by Joe on Sat Sep 19 10:39:02 2020

Apparently, Ruth grew up as a member of the East Midwood Jewish Center on Ocean Avenue. Age 15 (1948?), she graduated from James Madison HS on Bedford Avenue, near Avenue P about a mile south of the synagogue. Reports are that the family lived in Flatbush. Buses replaced the Ocean Avenue trolleys in 1951, so it is possible she rode the fast 8000's on Ocean Avenue. Or are there other transit routes she may have traveled before she left for Cornell University?
---
She may have graduated from James Madison just before the nickel fare became 7 or 8 cents on trolleys.

Her family home was 1584 East 9 Street, which is west of Coney Island Ave and near Ave P.

East Midwood Jewish Center is at 1625 Ocean Ave.

Justice Ginsburg graduated James Madison in 1950, so the Ocean Ave. trolley was still running. Another poster noted she lived on East 9th Street, near Ave. P based on the house number. So she probably used the BMT Brighton Line, the BMT Culver Line, the Coney Island Ave. trolley, and Kings Highway bus as well.

Thanks for the informative replies! So, Ruth lived a mile west of the high school and would not have used the souped-up Peter Witts on Ocean Avenue or any transit to get reach James Madison. Instead her neighborhood would include the PCC's I rode in the 1940's on Coney Island Avenue.

I had to read Wikipedia on Conservative Judaism to sense what the term meant. Google maps show several Orthodox synagogues now near her childhood home.

She was genuine.

She and her family attended services at the East Midwood Jewish Center, 1625 Ocean Ave, in Brooklyn

BMT lady to the highest court
way beyond trolley fender bender torts
now she is a D.C. lodger
far away from her Brooklyn Dodgers*
To become a Supreme Court judge is the greatest dream
Though Justice Ginsburg is also far away
from those beloved Egg Creams....

Why was this done in Manhattan? Are they afraid it will anger the neo-nazi's that roam aimless around Brooklyn?

"Why was this done in Manhattan?"

Could be that 50TH seemed easy to change.

There is a Ruth Street off Higbie Lane, West Islip, about a mile north of the LIRR electric coach yard.

On topic, I am surprised nobody has picked me up on the fare increase. Web reports are inconsistent about the date of her mother's death and her graduation from high school the next day. More favor 1950, but others say she was age 15 at graduation. If 1948, she graduated just before the fare increase. I am uncertain about trolley fare in June, 1950. I think there was period of time when the Board of Transportation was allowed to charge 8 cents on surface routes while the privates had to settle for 7 cents. By 1950 the surface fare could have been ten. Charts of subway fare increases don't always reflect surface (bus or trolley) rates.

At any rate, she was a walker. At least that is what she would have been called in some schools. In Louisiana, a walker was said to ride Bus Two.
