Thanks for the informative replies! So, Ruth lived a mile west of the high school and would not have used the souped-up Peter Witts on Ocean Avenue or any transit to get reach James Madison. Instead her neighborhood would include the PCC's I rode in the 1940's on Coney Island Avenue.

I had to read Wikipedia on Conservative Judaism to sense what the term meant. Google maps show several Orthodox synagogues now near her childhood home.
