Palisades Amusement Park straddled the towns of Cliffside Park and Fort Lee. I remember being there three times in 1967 and once in 1968. That monorail was brought down from Montreal after Expo 67 closed; it was one of the mini-rail trains that ran there. IIRC it went up at Palisades in 1969. I also remember there being talk about relocating the park to Sussex County, but nothing ever came of that.

I went there in the late summer of 1969. My mother took me, along with her lifelong friend and her son who was a few years younger than me (I was 10). Don't really remember that much about it, but at least I can say that I had been to Palisades.

SEPTA insists the PCC-II cars will return when the Richmond Ave. rebuild is completed, which it very nearly is, plus the Girard Ave. Bridge project. The uncertainty over this, however, is due to the PCCs being stored outside, and availability of parts.

When the PCCs stopped running at the end of January, there were just four units in service. New low-floor cars are scheduled to replace the PCCs and K cars in a few years, though.

So that's were the monorail came from. I went to Palisades Park in 1963 and 64 and the monorail wasn't there.

I did go to Expo 67 and ride it there. They called in a "mini-monorail".

There were actually three lines; Minirail Sainte-Helene, Minirail Notre-Dame and Minirail La Ronde.

This was in addition to their own rapid transit line, the Expo Express.

Midday Busing is in effect on the Port Jervis Line. One bus will run form Harriman, stopping at Campbell Hall, Middletown and Port Jervis.

The other buses will make all stops between Harriman and Port Jervis.

I remember there were two distinct types of mini-rail trains at Expo. One featured blue and white cars with fold-down side doors. Those were the ones we rode on; they ran on the line that went right through the US Pavilion. The other featured cars with what looked like an umbrella over each car. This was the type that came to Palisades. There was a commercial jingle that aired in '69 that mentioned, "brand new rides, the monorail." I remember the Expo-Express. IINM its cars were based on Toronto's subway cars. I likened them to IRT cars since they had three sets of doors per side.

The towns of Fort Lee and Palisades Park wanted the amusement park gone. Not only did they have to deal with the George Washington Bridge traffic, but also to/from the PAP. As more and more people from NYC were bused in, fewer people from Bergen County (where I live) visited it. The end really came in 1967, when both towns rezoned the property for future highrise buildings.. The first Horizon House, built in 1965, may have prompted their actions.

It became a victim of its own success. The onsite parking lots were woefully inadequate to handle the hoards of visitors who were "coming on over" in response to ads that I remember well. I know we had a devil of a time trying to find a parking spot when we went there. Irving Rosenthal, the sole owner after the death of his brother Jack, tried to postpone the inevitable for as long as he could, finally selling the property in early 1971 before it could be yanked out from under his feet.

Winston-Centex, who bought the property from Mr Rosenthal (as we Bergen County folks respectfully called him), was not ready to develop the property right away, so they offered him another year to run it. Both towns refused to allow this. End of story!

Winston-Centex did lease the property back to Rosenthal so the park could operate for one final season. Two gentlemen, Morgan "Mickey" Hughes and Fletch Creamer, Jr. tried to reopen the park for one more season (1972), but Fort Lee would not issue a business license.

If the museum class PCCs can run on market St in San Fran, there is no reason why they can’t be kept operational in Philly as well!

political will and meticulous maintenance. the bad news is that within both Septa and Muni there are likely "anti-streetcar" saboteurs staffers.

I don't remember that deal. I do remember going on the Swiss Sky Ride, the Ferris wheel and several kiddie rides including the helicopter (I was 10 1/2 in '67).

They really should build new light rail cars instead. There is no point in rebuilding old PCC cars except for museum excursions.

The pilot had a parachute? Not common for passenger planes.
