[PHOTO] The Gold R-16

Posted by Bill Newkirk on Thu Apr 9 09:41:34 2020

#6318 painted gold for the Golden Jubilee. One R-17 was painted also.
Perhaps someone may chime in and explain what the Golden Jubilee was all about.

Did they ever repaint it green or did the grime on it eventually make it look like dirty shit brown like all the rest of them ?

I believe it refers to the 1954-55 half-century anniversary year of the NYC subways.

I wasn't around in 1954, but for the diamond jubilee (75 years) they had tokens with a little diamond cutout marked 1904-1979...

I believe there were more than just one of each type of car painted gold. It was one of one type and 2 of the other. I just can't recall whether it was 2 R-16s and 1 R-17 or the other way around.

There was also a subway or elevated car from 1907 in the parade as well.

435 hydrants, 3 miles of a center line, 650 trash baskets and two buses were given the Gold paint treatment.

The Golden Jubilee parade, held October 10th, 1957, was the 50th Anniversary celebration of the 5th Avenue Association, which was succeeded in 1993 by the Fifth Avenue Business Improvement District.

If you are a NY Times digital subscriber: here's an article from 1957 about the parade.

The 1907 car was IRT Deck Roof Hi-V 3662 which has been preserved. It was one of an order of 50 cars built by ACF. None of these cars ever were converted to MUDC so they could only be used at the ends of trains.

Wonder if they crews had a nickname for the car?

If management and supervision prioritized making it a head car(operating motor) instead of in the middle of the consist?

That pretty much covers it. He started as a trolley operator, I think in the early 40s (he apparently was already working as such when World War II broke out, so he was deemed "essential" and not called to the fight). At some point, he drove a bus (possibly when his line may have changed to bus). He didn't like that much, so he took the test for motorman, passed the first time and worked in that position the rest of the time. Unfortunately, he was diagnosed with stomach cancer in early 1965 and died in late March of that year.

My parents and I lived with him and my grandmother until the summer of 1964, when they purchased their own house. When I was 4 (I think) we all rode with him on his 15 train. A picture was taken and it definitely was an R-16. I hope we still have it somewhere, probably in my grandmother's belongings that my mom and I packed up after she died in 1976. It's all in storage, I guess I'll find it eventually. I'll post it whenever I find it (assuming SubChat is still around by then).

Correct, but that was probably because they were designed from the start with provisions for center doors if needed which did happen.

Since that is one of the 50 R-16s assigned to the IND for A service, it probably spent its early years on the A Line which would be where the NYCTA would want it to be for publicity’s sake.

But even though later cars were designed and built with center doors, they still came with sills. You would have thought they'd tweak the structural design so that the sills weren't needed.

Also for the Fifth Avenue Association 50th Anniversary in 1957, there was also a new 1957 NYCTA GM TDH-5105 bus #7000 in all gold.
Also Fifth Avenue Caoch redid a GM TDH-5104 in gold and aquamarine exterior with matching vinyl gold and aquamarine upholstered seats inside. A beauty!

It may have been than the IRT felt that it wasn’t needed when they designed the decks and they found out with subsequent orders that it was so it was installed on the Hedleys and later cars.
