He started as a trolley operator, I think in the early 40s (he apparently was already working as such when World War II broke out, so he was deemed "essential" and not called to the fight). At some point, he drove a bus (possibly when his line may have changed to bus). He didn't like that much, so he took the test for motorman, passed the first time and worked in that position the rest of the time. Unfortunately, he was diagnosed with stomach cancer in early 1965 and died in late March of that year.My parents and I lived with him and my grandmother until the summer of 1964, when they purchased their own house. When I was 4 (I think) we all rode with him on his 15 train. A picture was taken and it definitely was an R-16. I hope we still have it somewhere, probably in my grandmother's belongings that my mom and I packed up after she died in 1976. It's all in storage, I guess I'll find it eventually. I'll post it whenever I find it (assuming SubChat is still around by then). |
