Posted by gold_12th on Fri Mar 27 08:34:39 2020 One person has died and 16 others have been injured after flames erupted inside a subway train in Harlem. The fire broke out at 3:18 a.m. Friday at the 110th Street Subway Station at Lenox Avenue. Upon arrival, firefighters found heavy fire inside the subway station coming from the subway cars. Heavy smoke and high heat confronted firefighters and the fire quickly went to a second alarm. A 36 year old man was pronounced dead at St Lukes Hospital. Four others were in serious condition at the hospital. Another twelve people were treated for minor injuries, including five firefighters. Fire began inside northbound 2 train as it was entering the 110th street station, authorities said. The fire spewed a large amount of smoke through the underground tunnels, disrupting service on the 1, 2, and 3 lines. There were fires in the station at 86th st and 96th street LION posits that it was the burning undercarriage of this train that started those fires.LION suspects something overheated under the train. Him wants to hear what the investigators say rather than the media and bystanders. LIONS do not trust media. |

Unless the reports of the arsonist being arrested is trueI'd prefer to wait for the fire marshal to investigate the fire or more precisely the fire damage. It's quite possible that an arsonist set other fires but not this one. It's quite possible that it is arson. There's no need instant analysis. There should be an investigation on why there was so much damage. Also, on how toxic the smoke was. |

Every item that goes into the manufacture of a subway car is supposed to meet rigid smoke and flame standards. For example, I recall going to a test of the flooring material used on the R46 which had to resist 1500 degrees for 20 minutes. I'd be hard pressed to believe that level of damage occurred without an accelerant. Then again, I am not a fire marshall. |

Read where he was found on the tracks in front of the train. Probably escaped the fire thru the front door after driving all the way into the station so passengers could have somewhere to escape to. Even if the suspected arsonist set "distraction" fires at 86 and 96 Streets, those fires would have been handled by other companies, while the 110 St. fire would have been assigned to a different company. All working fires in the transit system are second alarm upon arrival, so the "distraction" strategy, if that's what the smaller fires were, wouldn't have worked anyway. |
