Was March 23, 1968 a Saturday or Sunday?

Because I notice that's an 8 car train.

Thank you for the details (year and date) of the Bergen Avenue connection's closure, and for also providing the year that operations over it were limited to non-revenue moves. I knew it was sometime after 1945, but I didn't know when.
Roger Arcara's el 2nd & 3rd ave. el videos include clips of Composites using this connection.

So, demolition of the Bergen Ave. connection would have begun in late 1950, or sometime in 1951?

And just above the 149th & 3rd ave station there was that abandoned tower at the junction, unused for so many years, since between 1950 and the structure's demolition*.

Simple as its model board may have been, it would have been interesting to see it - probably dated from the WW1 era, when the connection was built as part of the Dual Contracts.

*would have been used to signal/control any non-revenue moves (?) between the IRT Wht. Plains Rd. line and the 3rd ave el between 1946-1950 correct?

That sounds like the train I was on. around that time I was the midnight Tw/M at 59/4 in Bkln and after my tour was over, late ERA members George Abere, and Martin Schachne, and I met and grabbed a ride on what was supposed to be the first train of R-40s in passenger service.

When the OP mentioned the “Westchester Av” connection, which one was being referred to, the one N/O 149 St or the Bergen Av cutoff which was N/O 143 St?

I met George Abere at a Sunrise Trail meeting a few years ago, and Martin Schachne on a couple of fantrips sometime between 1966 -1970.
They were very friendly and willing to share their knowledge of NY Transit history. Both men, true gentlemen.

Yes, that's right - 3rd ave. el N/O 149th st. was the Westchester connection correct?
Then I mixed that up mistakenly with the Bergen Ave. connection.
Sorry about that.

That's right. I rode on the only JJ train I would ever take, from Elderts Lane to 168th St. and back, on either Sunday the 24th or Sunday the 31st of 1968. There was a recital at Franklin K. Lane HS that day, by a singing family that was touted as the next Von Trapp Family Singers. Sadly, they were panned and faded into obscurity, never to be heard from again.

Actually, the Westchester Ave spur from 3rd Ave was the final abandonment phase of the Bergen Ave cutoff. Demolition of the cutoff, itself, began in 1949, moving north from the 143rd St station. Since the 3rd Ave el connected to the White Plains Rd line, north of Gun Hill Rd, the Westchester Ave spur was no longer needed.

I found some info about removal dates of both these connectors from a subchat post, written by Joe Frank (with a track map he created) from Feb. 1, 2018 that I saved - cut and pasted into a Wordpad doc.

I don't have the computer savvy necessary to transfer Mr. Frank's track map to this post from my Wordpad doc.

Thread info, its "current" (as of 2-1-2018) and original subject line follows below, with a paragraph quoted from Mr. Frank's post re - the removal dates for the connectors:

Posted by JOE @ NYCMTS - NYCTMG on Thu Feb 1 18:28:27 2018, in response to Re: [PHOTOS] (REMNANTS) was: Delivery Of IRT (1939) World's Fair Cars, posted by Elkeeper on Thu Feb 1 14:04:05 2018.

"My map shows the removal of the E.132nd Street IRT EL Yards, removed by 1950, as well as the removal of both the E. 150th Street 2-track connector (in 1951) to the West Farms IRT EL, and the Bergen Cutoff, removed in 1949-50"
-----------------------------------------------------------
Joe - Thank you very much for posting this original information back in 2018. If you prefer that people ask for your permission before using any of your material from earlier posts, in a post of their own, I apologize for this time, and will ask you in the future.

For some reason the IND was for many years hung up on green. The background color of the station entrances was green, the lamp cubes at the street entrances were green and even the track occupancy lights on the model boards in the signal towers were green even though logically they should have been red, or at least white like the BMT.
