Actually, the Westchester Ave spur from 3rd Ave was the final abandonment phase of the Bergen Ave cutoff. Demolition of the cutoff, itself, began in 1949, moving north from the 143rd St station. Since the 3rd Ave el connected to the White Plains Rd line, north of Gun Hill Rd, the Westchester Ave spur was no longer needed. |
