Will you please stop showing a statement when you are really asking a question?

Why don't you Email NYCT instead of asking here?

Maybe the answer is "when they damn well feel like it".

For every R46 on the B means one less R46 on the N/W. R46's are better on the N/W for when they need to swap trains in Astoria.

"?"

Assuming that is a question, the answer is

1) When and if CI Yd. obtains enough MUs to warrant AND
2) If there are insufficient MUs from the 68As to make rush hour service AND
3) If it is so decided.

I'd be more concerned about when the 179s return.

Having R-46s on the B is also useful since north terminals change during middays and early PMs.

For routes with frequent terminal changes (M, but 75's are verboten on the Eastern BMT) it would be a plus. I can think of the A (already has out of Pitkin), B, R (already out of Jamaica); so the B actually would make sense on the Northern terminal

Tje preemptive word is NOW. Since the R-46s have couplers more compatible with the NTTs, and electronic side signs it would make more sense to keep them longer. Who would have thought a few years ago the the R-32s and 42s would outlast the R-42s and that it looks like the R-32s will outlast the R-42s. In any case, if the NTTs are right now being moved off the N and Q and being moved to Queens lines in prep for CBTC, the logical lines for the displaced R-46 would be the N/W and the B lines where their electronic signs would be most useful so that signs can be changed quickly.

The M already has trains with electronic signs, the R-160s and will keep them since it is a Qns Blvd line.

Many R68 are ending up on the Q and with wrong signs. Assuming some rollsigns don’t have 96 St as the northern terminal, they are displaying 57 St and 6th Ave. Yes 6th rather than 7th Ave. Riders along 2nd Ave are afraid to get on any Q that is not an R160.

The incompetence of the MTA is baffling. The idea of chopping off the ends of perfectly good R46 cars to trim them down to 60' so that they can run on the Eastern Division is something even the late Terry Jones would not have considered doing. Then what do they do with the 15' ends? Make 30' mini-cars with them and send them to SIRT? Do they really think the welding job will be that good? The first one of those cars that breaks apart is going to be one massive lawsuit for the MTA, especially if it happens over Broad Channel.

The only thing I can see happening with the R-46s is that they would be transferred to the N and the B where their electronic signs would expedite the changing of signs that takes place on those lines.

All R46’s running to 96 whether a Q or N I have seen display 96 St/2nd Ave as north terminal. Front rollsigns at the C/R position display N on every R46 I have seen regardless of if it runs as a Q, N, or W.

Assuming they give a shit about the north sign. I think BDBF would trump that, though I don't know what they are. Couplers are a minor issue. They have adapters.

But if they can have a fleet of cars with identical couplers that DON'T need adapters why retain a fleet of cars that need an extra piece of equipment? As far as signs are concerned, its not only the north signs that are critical but if the R-46s are put on the N it would be a lot easier to swap them off with a W which I understand gets done from time to time.

Don't sell it short.
Sounds like a pretty good idea if it's done right.
It's been done before, completely rebuilding a car, changing end caps l, rebuilding car bodies.
I even mention this before as a way to modify the R46 into 65ft cars for the East.
