It’s interesting that the B of T opted not to include windshield wipers on the cars since the takeover of both the Culver and Fulton St els and the Rockaway ROW were always in the plans for the IND as well as the cross Bronx extension of the Concourse Line which was to include an elevated portion.

I’m not exactly sure, but I believe that only the R-1s and R4s had the “City of New York” on the sides. Later contracts did not.

This makes sense. I wonder how may incidents occurred of conductors being injured climbing between the cars to operate the doors

Obviously someone would have to close the roof vents in addition to the windows.

With the door controls inside on the BMT steels, the C/R was unable to observe the platform for passengers possibly caught in doors as the train left the station.

Weren't the doors at the C/R position the last to be closed ?

Before the C/R closed those doors, wouldn't he see if anybody was caught in the doors ?

I remember seeing prewar Ethel trains in the late 60s with "City of New York" visible on some, if not all, cars. Did Jamaica Yard still have R-1s then?

Kev, may he rest in peace, said he was never worried about that when he was a conductor. There was always something to grab onto. He did say he had a step plate give way once.

Yes I would imagine someone would close the vents and windows but they don’t exactly look weather proof when they’re closed. Especially those roof vents. And those doors are definitely not meant to keep water out.

One can speculate that the wipers weren't included because at the time the IND subway was planned, the takeover of the Culver & eastern end of the Fulton St El were proposals & not carved in stone. They Didn't want to spend the extra $$$ on a maybe. A NIMBY fight over yet another Elevated line in the Bronx was avoided when the NYW&B ROW became available & converted into the Dyre Ave Line. Thus, the IND Elevated extention was avoided. If the Concourse extention were to be built, It most likely would have had been a subway.
In the 1940s, NYC was on a crusade to rid the city of as many Els as possible, let alone build another one.
WWII would have put a stop to any Concourse extention anyway, making any extention plans moot.

Since the R1-9 fleet were singles, that would mean a wiper on both ends. There were appx 1700 R1-9s so that would mean 3400 wipers. I guess in 1930s bucks, that amounted to some sizeable $$$.

No. You're thinking of the price of the wiper blade alone. You're forgetting the arm it attaches to and the entire mechanism to operate it.

from the T.A.`s own statement many years ago.they didn`t want to install mechanical wipers on trains because the "droning" of the wipers would lull the m/m into a trance like state.

At least in the later years the R12 and R14 cars were more frequently used at the ends of trains (except of course for the 2 car sets used for the BG-SF shuttle) or at any place in the train other than the middle two cars so the caps and triggers were not used. The R10 is a unique car the only SMEE car with pneumatically operated doors.

Until the R-38s, windshield wipers on NYCT equipment were manually operated by the M/M, a situation that was mentioned in a Daily News article from the 1960s on the sad state of the NYCTS. Powered wipers are required by the FRA (and before that, the ICC) on the vision glasses of RR locos and MU cars. Even installing manual wipers on subway cars, there would still be the cost of the parts necessary for the MM to operate it, although it eventually proved to be a necessity.

The R1-9 didn't have pneumatic motors working the wipers. It was operated by a handle/crank by the motorman.
