Until the R-38s, windshield wipers on NYCT equipment were manually operated by the M/M, a situation that was mentioned in a Daily News article from the 1960s on the sad state of the NYCTS. Powered wipers are required by the FRA (and before that, the ICC) on the vision glasses of RR locos and MU cars. Even installing manual wipers on subway cars, there would still be the cost of the parts necessary for the MM to operate it, although it eventually proved to be a necessity. |
