I'F I'd come into a few bucks, I'd be looking for an AMC Pacer. Now those things are rare. NEVER see one on the road, even on a warm spring afternoon when car collectors would strut their wheels. AFAIK, there are more surviving Edsels out there than Pacers. I kinda liked the way they looked, like big fishbowls. Folks I knew that owned them say they'd get one good year out of them & then, everything would go.
Thanks to the Pacer, AMC would get a new meaning...American Made Crap!

I learned to drive in a 1952 Dodge with a semi-automatic transmission. The clutch was needed only to change the gearshift lever. So after you started the car, and you were out of your parking place, you pulled the lever straight down and you were in 3rd Gear, after letting the clutch out.
You accelerated then when you hit 20-25 mph, you took your foot off the gas pedal, and it shifted into 4th gear with a "clunk". You could also use 1st. and 2nd gears by pressing in the clutch and shifting to the L position. Drive in 1st, let off, and it would "clunk" into 2nd.

I don't remember, but I think if you were in 4th and a steep hill came up, it would automatically shift into 3rd gear due to engine vacuum.
So 95% of your driving was just gas and brake. When the car came to a stop,it always went back to 3rd gear.

Later on , I drove a real stick shift car and learned all the ropes of that mode.

My last stick shift car was this '95 Dodge Neon. 95 Neon It was pocket rocket!

There it is. Ugly ugly ugly.
A cousin of mine had a friend that was selling one of those around 1995. They thought I’d be interested in it. Meticulously rebuilt engine. Car was ready for the road and he wanted $500 but I respectfully declined. I just thought it was the ugliest car I ever saw. It was black by the way. And the last I heard a couple years ago is that it’s still sitting in his driveway.

I learned to drive on my brother's 1962 Plymouth Fury. I believe the push buttons were also on the left too. My dad would take to learn how to drive the Brooklyn Terminal Market on a quiet Sunday.

With the market closed down on a Sunday, my dad taught me how to drive, stop, make turns and parallel park. No drivers ed needed. IIRC there were other dads teaching their teens how to drive. Perfect place it wasn't considered a public street.

One of our neighbors in South Bend had a standard shift car (might have been a '55-56-57 Chevy; it had rectangular vent windows) and I remember being fascinated by the way they shifted gears. I started badgering my father on why we couldn't have a car like that. He said his '50 Chevy had a standard shift, but after that, he bought only automatics. I was also intrigued by convertibles. When my father bought our '62 Rambler, I asked him right away if they were going to put a roof on it and he said yes. I was bummed.

The transfer case and rear axle are still untouched. The engine was replaced at 599K. It still ran, but was gushing oil out of the rear main seal. Had they replaced the seal, if there was any end play in the crankshaft, it would have pounded out that seal within a few weeks. T Peugeot 5-speed transmission still has its original synchronizers. It had third gear, the countershaft and bearings replaced in 2015. Fourth clutch, fourth set of brakes.

My father didn’t believe in automatics which in the 1950s were an option rather than standard equipment. He also avoided V8 engines, feeling that a 6 cylinder had enough power for his needs. Ha also disliked excessive chrome trim and ordered the least expensive 1956 Chevy the model 150. he was very upset when the car came in with a single strip of chrome and was told the while the 1955 model had no chrome at all except the bumpers, a small strip of chrome was now on the 1956 model.

Great story, My first car in 1959 was a 1957 Chevy 210 model , with some chrome. Very small V-8, with a 3-Spd. column shift.
