No, I am right. It’s not stereotyping because I am referring to a group of people based on their exact practices, and not generalizing. I never claimed that I was talking about “old people.” You made that assumption. You are stereotyping.

Prepaid credit cards cost money. You can have a debit card attached to a checking account, but if you keep a low balance, there are often monthly fees. People don’t realize that it’s expensive to be poor.

That having been said, the problem isn’t that the transit agency should cater to people who can’t afford credit/debit cards, but banking should be subsidized for the poor. But that’s another topic.

Of course, I also think that there’s merit to being able to use cash to buy things. We are already over-tracked.

They are also stubborn and have their own ideas. Me relatives spent a fortune on Jitterbug dumb phones, despite me explaining Ting. My mother has the same Smartphone as me, but will not use it for anything else than reading e-mail. They can't stand typing on it, even with a stylus. When I visit, I also have to clean up the robo phone messages.

Gotta research for no min balance and no fee checking accounts, which is hard without the internet. It's easier to find one in NJ rather than NY. I found M&T. But I am wary of them because of the hacking I got last week despite the ATM card having never left the house. It was either them or OMNY got a breach. M&T has a shitty branch structure in NJ (I fund it with online bank to bank transfers) and only one in Manhattan is open on Saturdays, and they downsized from Hudson City's already shitty network.

TD just went Contactless from branch-issued cards last month, but there must be a $100 min balance.

There is also Unity Bank and Fulton Bank, not common in NYS. But these smaller banks don't offer Contactless cards.

Merrill Lynch /Bank of America is still sending out renewed credit cards, expiring in 2025 that are not Contactless.

You can tell that to Washington DC, Baltimore, Montreal, Chicago, and Seattle. They all have their own cards and have no plans to get rid of them and can't demand people buy their own debit and credit cards to use the system..

To build on what Spider-pig said;

Legal tender means it’s valid to be offered as payment, I as a seller am under no obligation to accept it.

Straight from the US Tresuary Department website FAQ.

Legal Tender Status

I thought that United States currency was legal tender for all debts. Some businesses or governmental agencies say that they will only accept checks, money orders or credit cards as payment, and others will only accept currency notes in denominations of $20 or smaller. Isn't this illegal?

The pertinent portion of law that applies to your question is the Coinage Act of 1965, specifically Section 31 U.S.C. 5103, entitled "Legal tender," which states: "United States coins and currency (including Federal reserve notes and circulating notes of Federal reserve banks and national banks) are legal tender for all debts, public charges, taxes, and dues."

This statute means that all United States money as identified above are a valid and legal offer of payment for debts when tendered to a creditor. There is, however, no Federal statute mandating that a private business, a person or an organization must accept currency or coins as for payment for goods and/or services. Private businesses are free to develop their own policies on whether or not to accept cash unless there is a State law which says otherwise. For example, a bus line may prohibit payment of fares in pennies or dollar bills. In addition, movie theaters, convenience stores and gas stations may refuse to accept large denomination currency (usually notes above $20) as a matter of policy.

It's much more moderate overall, but it makes sense that London being on a smallish island would be influenced by ocean temps in a manner similar to the Pacific NW.

Europe tends to be more moderate, but farther inland places like Moscow are somewhat similar to similar latitudes in NA. Even farther inland and iinm places like Kazakhstan are even less temperate than places of similar latitude in NA. Compare Calgary to Nur-Sultan for example.

I know that's Asia, but the Europe-Asia border is fairly arbitrary imo.

LA needs to get Metrolink on board (no pun intended) since all of the various bus agencies already accept TAP.

It’s not just your opinion, it’s fact. I still call it “Europe” and “Asia,” but those are part of the same continent. They should define continent like they defined planet.

Moscow is significantly farther north than any major city in North America. It’s at 55°N. That parallel passes through northern Labrador.

Once you get to Central Asia, it begins to be like North America, I think. And I think that western North America is warmer than East Asia.

My only contactless card is a credit card from BofA, which they sent to replace my existing unexpired card, and without me asking. The only two times I used OMNY was by Apple Pay. I prefer to use that to a physical credit card. Many people have mobile wallets and don’t realize it.

All the doing of the Gulf Stream.

And in eastern Europe, it has less effect, which is why Moscow is so much colder than Oslo.

And by the time you get to central Asia, the oceans have minimal effect at all. Ulan Bator has far greater seasonal temperature swings than any place in North America.

Though even in North America, the typical summer high in the Fraser Valley of BC, at latitude 50, is close to 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

My mother just got a new BofA card for her Merrill Lynch account, which is a distinct entity within BofA. It is not Contactless. They'll just keep sending out old cards until inventory is depleted.

About 12 years ago, I got a new credit card from Chase that was decorated as Bank One with their defunct phone number on it, even though they had merged. That is because when they merged, Bank One (Jamie Dimon came from) took over Chase's credit card operations. (Chase banking operations were actually taken over by Chemical's in that merger).

Contactless is rare because no one has tried such a large project to encourage it yet in the US. It was rare in the UK until Transport for London began accepting it. Get a major market to accept it and that’s the keyhole you need.
