I was unaware of Brooklyn's Union Street car line, which appears to have been a handy crosstown route halfway between the Bergen St. and Ninth Street lines. It included a bridge over the canal, and the street may have been a bit wider than parallel streets. What were the terminals?--- In checking the current bus map, I see that my old PCC route called Smith-Coney Island has gone bye-bye, combined with an Red Hook (Ikea) route from downtown to the site of the Ninth Avenue barn, maybe an improvement for riders in previous underserved regions. |

This is the same locations as the infamous Malbone Street Wreck which occurred on November 1, 1918 As this photo makes clear, this accident occurred near the site of the wreck of 1918, but not in the same location and not at all under the same circumstances. This train is switching from the south-bound track (the one in the 1918 wreck that takes sharp turns ahead) to the straighter north-bound track, and here the lead car collided with the embankment wall, not the tunnel wall as in 1918. This train was clearly not speeding out of control as in 1918, and this accident was not the operator's fault (though he might have still had to pee in a cup). |

The current B61 is a budget cut-induced mongrel and is not an improvement over anything. Also, the Union Street replacement bus, the B71, ran until 2010, it was eliminated together with your B75. |

It looks like the train had been backed up a bit already in that photo and that the crunched portion had actually hit the tunnel wall that is out of the picture. The front truck switched and the rear truck did not. |

I wonder if it split the switch, skidded straight forward at more or less the angle in the photo, and struck the v-point of the tunnel wall north of the platform, almost the same point as the Malbone wreck. |
