The 9th Avenue El is extended from 135th Street to 155 Street with a stop at 145th Street. The 140th Street Station will not open until 1898.

The 11th Street Connection in Queens opens for service today. It connects the local tracks of the IND Queens Line south of Queens Plaza Station with the BMT 60th Street Tunnel. This allows BMT Broadway Line Brighton Locals to operate to the IND Forest Hills Station. (In 2020 this service is provided by RT. R trains).

A Franklin Avenue Shuttle train approaching Prospect Park derails and collides into the tunnel wall at Empire Boulevard. This is the same locations as the infamous Malbone Street Wreck which occurred on November 1, 1918. The switch which was under repair moved after the first truck of the leading car , 3669 passed over it. Several people were hurt. The full consist was (s) 3669-3668 and 3528-3529. Car R-32 3669 was damaged beyond repair.

The MTA opens a new station on the Conrail operated Harlem Line. It is called Brewster North and is situated between Brewster and Patterson stations. It was renamed Southeast in 2003.

Metro-North Railroad Hudson Line Train No. 8808 derails north of Spuyten Duyvil Station. The consist was P-32 225 and coaches 6156, 6147, 6188, 6440, 6345, 6288, and 6222. The crash killed four passengers and injured over sixty.
