They can't send SMEE trains from the Eastern Divsion to CIY via Montague.

Is the Nassau Street connection even operable now ?

If you mean the R32s and R42s, the Nassau St connection still exists but not used for revenue trains any more.

I realize that R32s and R42s could also move via Essex Connector to 207th - which also was OOS for revenue moves from 1976 until about 2010 when the M was rerouted.

The only SMEE cars left at ENY are the fifty R42s. They can be sent to CIY via the Essex St connector, changing ends north of B'way Lafayette or W4 to get to CI via the D or F.

Why would the M go to 207 when it shares its fleet with the other Eastern Division lines?

Why are the 42s not allowed via Broad St BMT/Montague tube?

According to nycsubway.org track maps it is still there but not used for revenue service. I imagine it is still usable for equipment moves.

Related question - why would R32 and R42 cars have to avoid the Montague Tunnel? 75 footers use it every day.

Tunnel profile was changed during rebuild for the tapered sided car body, not straight sided cars.

R 46/68/160/179/211 have tapered side walls.
Older R units don't, and beven though the R42 appears to have tapered side walls, it still has straight wall profile that newer cars don't.

A mistake,but since older R units don't operate on routes B/D/N/Q or R,it doesn't matter.
The Southern Division has its own shops to handle specific cars, preferably newer models.
All older R units are in the North, with a few Eastern division cars tossed in.

Basically, the Northern section, and the Eastern division are unitized... with 207 being the Main Overhaul shop, ENY and Pitkin being regular maintenance shops.

The Eastern division is actually better off without the Southern Division.

207 is the Main Overhaul shop for the east.
Not Coney island.

If an Eastern Div car has to operate to CIYd, it can operate through Chrystie and turn back at either Bway/Laf or W 4 St and access the yard via the Manny B.

Apparently the curvature of the sides on the R-42s is not sufficient to to clear the new construction that the cesspool of incompetence that passes tfor TA management allowed to happen.

Yes, I have seen that.
It's a journey, too.
West Fourth st,then cross over ,then again south bound on the Manny B.
However, it's easier to just cross over there, and keep going to 207.

When the North and East were grouped together.
The southern division remained it's own, just like Jamaica.
The toss up is Concourse..
It would be common sense for 207 to be it's heavy duty shop since it's so close.

Someone did not do a CAD layout or if that was not available , some other way to determine clearances:(.

the transit construction field has been knowledgeable about the design and curvature of transit tunnels decades before computers. why did this happen?
so now some of the BMT-IND fleet cannot operate over routes via tunnel, or below Canal St. and heads are not rolling?

Was this problem covered by the newspapers at all?
The Post for example, with its screaming headlines?

It was certainly covered here, which is often a more reliable source of transit news than a general-interest newspaper or TV outlet.

true.
I meant how much newspaper coverage did this receive, that the general public would have followed, as opposed to the newspapers as a source of info. for this. Any thread titles come to mind, or key word searches for threads about this that would be good?

Thanks.

So, then all pre war R units, ABs, D types and post war units through to and including 42? Something with the tube rebuilding?

Not necessarily the tube itself, but rather the relocation of certain underwater electrical and communications cables that when finished would not clear straight sided cars. far be it from the cesspool of incompetence that passes for NYCTA engineering to specify that the tunnel clearances accommodate cars still in service that have the most restrictive dimensions.

I am reading this post and cannot believe that there is level of incompetence that has reached a new plateau at the division of planning. Even if it was anticipated that there would be fewer non sloped R units around, its makes zero sense to the relocation of cables in a way that impacts older units.

Many moons ago, the BoT/IND had the foresight to make all pumper units and other work trains with clearances to the IRT as well as the IND/BMT. Shame they got dumber as the years went on.
