Nobody complained. For the 50 cents, you got a one seat relaxing roomy ride to Penn on a trip that would take about a half hour, & had a chance to grab a relaxing smoke on the way in while doing your X word puzzle in the Daily Mirror. Its the simpler things from a simpler time. Money well spent!!

With regard to #3, while no 80 mph trains will be roaring down the Lower Montauk freight line, strictly speaking one crossing there would be trespassing and subject to a fine at the least if caught, and in any event, one should be on the lookout for any freight trains and be sure to stay out of their way.

You are correct. Between the time of purchase and the end of service in June 1962 the city leased the branch back to the LIRR.

I believe it regularly departed form NYPS directly opposite the Broadway Ltd. So there you had side by side the PRR's signature train alongside the LIRR most lowly train.

That's awesome! Nowadays, the closest equivalent is the AM run from West Hempstead with no corresponding PM departure. I think it might be the most oddball commuter train to visit Penn Station of the 3 railroads, or perhaps it ties with the last remaining MU run from East Williston.

Wouldn't it be interesting if the Atlantic Ave branch was converted into some kind of express subway line, and the Rockaway Beach branch is also revived as a subway line. You can then revive the connection at Woodhaven Blvd, and run express trains into downtown Brooklyn, if not Manhattan!

there are lit signals on the middle tracks of the RBB - I saw one at Aqueduct - North Conduit station, and at several other places along the line on tracks that were clearly not in use by any trains. The 2nd arch roof car from the bottom is one of the older T54 trailers. In 1917, the arch roof was of a differing profile than the ones in the 1920's, taller at edges, then a little flatter.

Show them the money ( or the potential to make money ) and it will be built. Atlantic Ave / Barclay Center station took years of renovation work, especially of the old Interborough line tracks and station, but it did happen, and now that the Barclays Center is built along with the shopping center, you can bet that money is being made fast and furiously.

The Interborough Lines are now known as the numbers 2,3, 4 and 5 lines in Brooklyn - the 2 and 3 lines run local in Brooklyn, with the 4 and 5 line running express. they diverge just before crossing the East River in separate tunnels so that the 2 and 3 run along the West side of Manhattan while the 4 and 5 run on the East side. The 2 and 5 lines re-join in the East Bronx to East 180th Street, where the 2 goes to East 241st Street while the 5 goes to Dyre Ave. The 4 serves the West Bronx while the 3 ends in Harlem at West 148th Street. In Manhattan the West side gets local service from the 1 line up to the Bronx at 242nd Street, while the East side gets local service from the 6 line up to the East Bronx at Pelham Bay Park. Look at a subway map or details.

VIDEO and DETAILS: Middle Tracks of Rockaway Line between the North Channel Bridge and Aqueduct

Posted by Dj Hammers on Wed Oct 16 16:11:53 2019, in response to Re: [PHOTOS] Walking The Rockaway Beach Branch, posted by jailhousedoc on Mon Oct 14 00:06:35 2019.

In the period of 2000-2004, the tracks and switches in the area were realigned to increase train speeds and reduce maintenence costs. Most notably, switches north of Aqueduct and north of the North Channel Bridge were realigned so that trains going to/from tracks F1 and F2 take a physically-straight move over the switch points. This has helped reduce running times.

Track F3, except for a short stub for work train use only, has been abandoned between Aqueduct Racetrack and Howard Beach. Track F4 remains in service, except for the segment between Aqueduct N-Conduit and Liberty Junction. There is a trailing point switch just south of Aqueduct N-Conduit that merges track F4 into track F2 now.

For the most part, any tracks that were abandoned did not have their signal equipment removed. There are plenty of out of service GRS type-AW automatic signals with two-shot GT S-aspects, sitting on top of relay cases, standing on the out of service portions of both F3 and F4.

All four tracks south of Howard beach are still in use and available. They are often used for work train staging, turning trains, etc.

Track F3 south of Howard Beach is still set up with two-shot GT timing, set for 40MPH. This timing area used to begin all the way up by Aqueduct Racetrack, which is where the associated GT40 sign used to exist. After F3 was abandoned north of Howard Beach, a new GT40 sign was not installed south of Howard Beach on F3 to tell T/Os the speed of the timing section on that track. As a result, many T/Os operate quite slow in the southbound direction on F3.

Here are some videos showing trains operating on the remaining in-service track:

Continuous Welded Rail Train not only operating on, but dropping new rail, on track F4:

A line service turning back south at Howard Beach, operating from F2 to F4 to F3:

There still seem to be a bunch of slowdown kinks in that line. Stop and crawl over the bridge (afraid of falling into the water?), slow and crawl Westbound, RR north before Howard Beach (I recall there's some sort of kink in the rails about there) then another slow spot East of the mainland. It's a straight line from the island to Howard Beach, it should be 70 mph until 3/4 mile before JFK. That's how the Chinese would do it.

I think it depends on where in midtown you're heading. Going by the published rush hour schedules and allowing for a 12 minute run up the RBB from Liberty Junction to Queens Blvd, Far Rock to 42 St via QBL local would be about 65 minutes, while the current rush hour time on the A from Far Rock to 42 St is about 74 minutes. Would be 9 minutes saved be worth it?
