VIDEO and DETAILS: Middle Tracks of Rockaway Line between the North Channel Bridge and Aqueduct

Posted by Dj Hammers on Wed Oct 16 16:11:53 2019, in response to Re: [PHOTOS] Walking The Rockaway Beach Branch, posted by jailhousedoc on Mon Oct 14 00:06:35 2019.

In the period of 2000-2004, the tracks and switches in the area were realigned to increase train speeds and reduce maintenence costs. Most notably, switches north of Aqueduct and north of the North Channel Bridge were realigned so that trains going to/from tracks F1 and F2 take a physically-straight move over the switch points. This has helped reduce running times.

Track F3, except for a short stub for work train use only, has been abandoned between Aqueduct Racetrack and Howard Beach. Track F4 remains in service, except for the segment between Aqueduct N-Conduit and Liberty Junction. There is a trailing point switch just south of Aqueduct N-Conduit that merges track F4 into track F2 now.

For the most part, any tracks that were abandoned did not have their signal equipment removed. There are plenty of out of service GRS type-AW automatic signals with two-shot GT S-aspects, sitting on top of relay cases, standing on the out of service portions of both F3 and F4.

All four tracks south of Howard beach are still in use and available. They are often used for work train staging, turning trains, etc.

Track F3 south of Howard Beach is still set up with two-shot GT timing, set for 40MPH. This timing area used to begin all the way up by Aqueduct Racetrack, which is where the associated GT40 sign used to exist. After F3 was abandoned north of Howard Beach, a new GT40 sign was not installed south of Howard Beach on F3 to tell T/Os the speed of the timing section on that track. As a result, many T/Os operate quite slow in the southbound direction on F3.

Here are some videos showing trains operating on the remaining in-service track:
