Then I’m surprised that at least the lower level at least wasn’t designed for rapid transit since Moses had no power over the PA.

While Moses may have been “ethnically” Jewish, he converted to the Episcopal religion quite a while before he died.

It probably cost less to design it for cars, than for some idea for mass transit that had no real support.

I'm more annoyed at the lack of rail tracks on the Tappan Zee replacement. We should know better by now. Getting WoH into Grand Central would insulate those lines from a potential Hudson river tunnel closure (and potentially NJT would build a wye so that Main/BCL and PVL customers could go to Grand Central).

While highways are an important part of NYC infrastructure, had Moses not been so anti mass transit, some of those highways could have been built like those in Chicago with provisions in the medians for rapid transit. Having attended Queens College and dated girls who live in two fare zones I can see the benefits of subway extensions in the medians of the Grand Central Pky, the LIE, the Van Wyck and the Cross Island.

Greenwich Village was completely inhabitable when the WSH existed. Maybe with an elevated highway on the waterfront it wouldn't have gentrified as horribly.

How would the East Village have been affected at all?

It was not completely uninhabitable. (DOT punching Seventh Avenue through did some damage). It has since gentrified very nicely and very nice along that waterfront with that urban cancer gone. Many cities are tearing down their elevated highways, Seattle's Alaskan Way being the latest. Niagara Falls just did.

IIRC a truck fell thru the roadway onto the street, primarily due to weathering & falling concrete chunks exposing & rotting away the re-bar. Post snowstorm road salt was thought of a the primary culprit. The next day the highway was closed.

The entire Dan Ryan Expressway was located to divide neighborhoods and encouraghe whitef light/commuting from the burbs. Thanks Mayor Daley.

The Ryan was supposed to relieve congestion on Lake Shore Drive; the morning it opened, the RI and IC between them lifted 5k fewer tix and both highways were gridlocked.

More like SoHo, the Lower East Side, and Chinatown would have been impacted. The neighborhoods would have suffered more, and either wouldn't have gentrified or gentrified at a slower pace. There just wouldn't have been enough of an "interesting" community to attract new residents.

It was not completely uninhabitable.

Yes, which is what I said.

DOT punching Seventh Avenue through did some damage

"DOT" did not exist in 1917.

It has since gentrified very nicely and very nice along that waterfront with that urban cancer gone.

Meaning it's now reserved exclusively for the very rich, and to hell with the people of the rest of the city.

Many cities are tearing down their elevated highways, Seattle's Alaskan Way being the latest.

Seattle's Alaskan Way was completely replaced with an underground highway, New York's West Side Highway wasn't.

Niagara Falls is a poor example because it is a declining city without much need for routing traffic through, so the RM Parkway can be removed without much traffic impact. That's similarly true of uncompleted stubs like the old Embarcadero Freeway in San Francisco, despite San Francisco being a busy city.

One iteration was elevated, and buildings would be built around it creating elevated tunnels. This would also help muffle the noise. Although it would have cut an even bigger swath.

You curse his memory because of misapprehended facts?

No part of the Lomex would have passed through the Village. It passed almost entirely (but admittedly not totally) through then unpopulated industrial areas. Soho is nice now but wasn't back then.

Meanwhile, thanks to Jacobs, not only do the people have to deal with heavy trucks and congestion at street level, the West Village that she wrote about no longer exists because of unbridled gentrification.
