Moses never admitted publicly that anyone ever gave him any trouble, whether it was a political figure or a private person. Moses had the advantage of never facing an election so he could always avoid the public. |

I have to correct myself.Official reports had Israel planning a pavilion as early as 1962 but pulled out of the Fair due to costs. Caro suggests that Moses made it financially difficult for Israel to participate but the truth is, a lot of countries complained about costs. So perhaps Moses didn’t bar Israel from the Fair. |

It was.The PA floated the funds to build the Narrows Bridge in trade for the New span across the Hudson River at 125th St. This bridge was virtually the Twin of the Narrows span. Instead, the GW was given a new lower deck...the second bridge perminatly put on hold, and the VN given the green light. The PA also crafted a shady ass deal that saw to no other crossings were built north/south of the GW for miles in trade for the Narrows Bridge. |

I sometimes wonder if anything should be named after anybody. I also sometimes wonder if the people making these suggestions are as perfect as they want us to think they are. And if we start taking names off things, we can start with the bridge that was erected on the site of the demolished Tappan Zee Bridge. The man for whom the new bridge was named, while looking like a saint compared to his son, had some reprehensible beliefs in my estimation.Moses-- I think he hated people in general from what I can gather. He would have been happy to build roads that no one used. He was an equal-opportunity demolitionist who, after bulldozing low-income neighborhoods in New York City went on to bulldoze middle-class neighborhoods in Nassau County (half of the current RoW of the Southern State Parkway runs over bulldozed properties as does a good chunk of the Seaford-Oyster Bay Expressway) and would have been happy to bulldoze upper-class neighborhoods in Oyster Bay if the people there didn't have the money and power to stop him. |

Thats the one place they really needed a bridge (or tunnel), between Rye & Oyster Bay. If Moses could have got that done, that (IMO) would have been a great achievement. As we all know, getting off Long Island means going thru the City which is a nightmare. Looking back at a more harm than good scale, a bridge or tunnel there would be looked upon as very good. |

The GWB was built with provision for adding a lower deck, so it makes sense that that would be built, rather than a whole new crossing at 125th St. And it's hard to envision how a 125th St. bridge would connect on the Manhattan side. It's certainly a good thing they didn't try to turn 125th St. into an expressway. The other proposal that was considered at one time, a bridge from the Cross County Parkway to Alpine, NJ, would have been just as bad, potentially ripping up the whole Downtown Yonkers/Getty Square area. And the Tappan Zee Bridge was built where it was because that was just outside the zone in which the Port Authority had the exclusive right to build trans-Hudson crossings. |

One of the reasons that the RR was bankrupt was because Moses hogged most of the state's construction money to build his highways, bridges and his housing projects. His policies also sent the LIRR into a tailspin and directly led to the decline of the subways by the 1960's. |
