TA says this means 6 car shuttle trains. That could mean R62A's, are praying for no union issues, or conductors come back, or 5 car R142's, which need not be custom-assigned.

Looks like they will have to swap out the north track every month now rather than every 2 months. Wonder if they will do anything to make that job less laborious ?

But it very well might be behind walls. That is, at the west end of the new platform, track 4 goes into a tunnel, and if you lean over and look into that tunnel, you will see track 4 curve to the right, but you won't be able to see the merge with the uptown local 1/2/3 track.

I think they are planning exactly that- with the area closed off to the general public, there'll be no need for the sidewalk bridge. In fact, I think the plans specifically allude to this.

So the whole deal of removing and reinstalling the bridge will be a thing of the past...

Those cars came from the 6.

The cars originated on the 6,
were transfered to the 7 when the R142As arrived to serve on the Pelham line. When contract R188 began the R142As were transfered to the 7 (and rebuilt) and the R62As returned to the Pelham line.

As to the circle/diamond lights I don't think they can be turned off so it shows whatever the crew wants to use (I guess)

That is why there are websites like NYC Subway.Org, the Transit Museum, LIRR Railroad website, among several others to tell and show the history of the subways, the local railroads and other features.

I really doubt the MTA would have keep up the older elevated transit lines just so the rail-fans could see how it was done in the past, no matter how much rail-fans would have wanted those lines preserved.

In a way it is similar with other features and architecture. Plenty of photographs have to be taken, or else the structures are gone or changed in major ways.

Ask any of the kids today if they can find the Pan-AM Building . . .

Correct, but there are lots of R62s/R62As that never made it to Flushing and never got the circles and diamonds. Are any of these others still coupled (not linked) together? They would be more appropriate for the shuttle.

Once the renovations are complete, there will be a new island platform that serves both remaining tracks. Since the current track 4 platform will be abandoned, they won't need to maintain a bridge to it, so getting trains out will be much easier.

Not just "behind walls." The current track 4 platform will be abandoned. Much of the current concourse (and platforms) will be closed off entirely. The track connection to the west side mainline will remain open, but you won't be able to get anywhere near the switch.

Exactly. New island platform just east of the current station means no need to access the old platform means no bridge required.

There is no way an uptown Lex train (local or express) can enter the shuttle station. Those track connections were severed decades ago. The only track connection remaining at Grand Central is from the eastbound shuttle on track #1 which merges with the downtown #6 local track south of Grand Central.

Similarly, there is no way a downtown Broadway train (local or express) can enter the shuttle station. The only track connection remaining at Times Square is from the westbound shuttle track #4 to the uptown #1 local track just beyond the shuttle station. Unlike the connection at Grand Central, which occurs deep in the tunnel out of sight, the connection at Times Square is completely visible, and many railfans find it intriguing, which is why so many are sad that it too will become out of sight after the construction.

Yes, only to replace the trains with others. Furthermore, according to the track diagram on nycsubway.org from The Tracks of New York (scroll down and over), there are no switches between tracks 1 and 4 between Grand Central and Times Square, so the train on track 1 can only come from the Lex line and the train on track 4 can only come from Broadway.

There is a stairway that leads up to the street (W43rd & B'way) at the north end of the shuttle station on 4 Track. Unless that entrance is sealed off, a cross over of 4 Track to the TSq complex & rebuilt shuttle station will be required.

LION was thinking about that.

I mean how hard would it be to replace that bridge that has to be disassembled and reassembled after every movement with a small mechanical drawbridge. It would likely be cheaper than closing the exit.

Others have said that 43rd and Bway will be closed, but a new entrance will be built on the north side of 42nd near Bway.

43rd and Bway can only handle very few people, so a bigger entrance might be a decent trade-off.
