Yes, only to replace the trains with others. Furthermore, according to the track diagram on nycsubway.org from The Tracks of New York (scroll down and over), there are no switches between tracks 1 and 4 between Grand Central and Times Square, so the train on track 1 can only come from the Lex line and the train on track 4 can only come from Broadway.
