Clean the trains at the first opportunity where doing so will not delay service. But don't take trains out of service and cause delays just to remove graffiti!

Its company policy because if a train goes down the road tagged up it encourages more vandals and embarasses NYCT too

There were a lot of R 27/30's in yards that had vandal issues.

Fresh Pond Yard or Halsey Layup were easier to hit than Pitkin or Jamaica Yard.

7 train had graffiti but was relatively clean because its yard and layup positions were not most inviting.

During the 1970s the R46 fleet was the new showcase equipment and was kept graffiti-free. I lived in Brooklyn near the 'F' train at the time, and the R46s were clean and the a/c always worked.

Can someone enlighten me why they are concerned with graffiti, when other crimes such as urination, defecation, fare evasion, assaults, etc are now commonplace? If nobody cares about the latter, why care about the former? Let everything go to hell since that's what "they" want.

Graffiti was a symptom of the deterioration of the City and its most visible everyday manifestation.

The return is a symbol of the breakdown of what had become a better-ordered city.

And how commonplace are they really? Do you have any real numbers, or just a subjective perception? Assaults would be the most serious concern, have they really increased? Urination/defecation is a real concern too. Fare evasion is the MTA's concern, not directly that of other riders.

Although, the Ronan silver/blue color scheme on the non-stainless steel cars was so hideous, in many cases, the graffiti was an improvement (not to excuse the fact that it was vandalism).

I have always felt that the R-36/R-10 style racing stripe scheme should have been applied to all the non stainless steel cars instead of either the Ronan or redbird schemes.

And if there is no train available to replace the tagged train (like if the train hit was one stored on the tail tracks above 96/2)? Better to run the tagged train than to miss an interval. Make sure there is another train that can replace it when it gets to the other terminal.

All events as described by posters about are legitimate in outlook. However NYCT can resolve a graffiti issue by removing it, it can't arrest the social issues of crime in the subway. Addressing crime is the responsibility of the Police. However a political agenda by some public prosecutors (DA's) who the position feel that to pursuit the application of the law is predatory to an underprivileged class of citizens.

Big difference the way NYC was like in the 1940's through the mid 1960's.

Coney Island Yard and Jamaica Yard. Two very difficult yards to vandalize.

That is part of the reason those trains were cleaner.

As far as I am concerned I am entitled to my own opinion about this subject matter. Graffiti never left the subway, it just took on new forms. Acid marks on glass, and interior / exterior stainless steel surfaces of subway cars, scratches on interiors and exterior surfaces of subway cars, I even saw the interior door frame of a new 179 scratched. I am not sure what type of "ART" this is I have seen hundreds of white station tiles destroyed with acid brown marks.
Every inch of track wall in tunnels are covered with graffiti,
Structures adjacent to elevated subway lines are covered with graffiti, the elevated structures have sections that are covered with graffiti. RD (Robert Dyer) the 46 year old city employee was caught last year applying his signature RD tag. I remember him since the 1980's His tag is now covering the tunnel walls of the 4,& 5 from 125th to Grand Central. This was done about three years ago.
IMHO every inch of any type of graffiti should be removed from every surface and maintained that way.
My first train ride at age 10 in 1972 was an R-32 N train.
Every inch of the exterior and interior was covered with graffiti.

Back then all the trains even the R-44 & 46's were covered with graffiti, the stations were covered with graffiti, there were no accurate signs on the trains, there was no A/C, many times only one door opened, clear announcements were rare, there was litter everywhere, the trains very often were dark. Sometimes the graffiti was so bad you could not see out the window.

All of this gave the impression that no one cared and as a result ridership fell.

I would like to see the entire system free from any form of graffiti, litter, peeling paint etc.

This is just my opinion.

One thing that would help a lot is more aggressive criminal prosecution of graffiti vandals. I don't know for sure, but I suspect the courts are very lenient toward them.

If it is known far enough ahead of time the terminal dispatcher can institute a flexible interval (called a “flex” on the IRT and a “stretch” on the other divisions) so that an even headway can be operated instead of just one big gap in service.

Leniency by the courts and the prosecutors is definitely a problem. In some Asian countries, the perps are actually flogged for such offenses. Maybe if the Constitutional ban on so called “cruel and unusual” punishments were eliminated, crime would plummet, and of it were done on a regular basis then it would no longer be “unusual.'

That ban does not need to be lifted as flogging is NOT a cruel or unusual punishment. Back in the days when the Constitution was written cruel and unusual punishment was being tarred and feathered, or being drawn and quartered. Even the Guillotine was neither cruel nor unusual.

They weren't exactly providing reliable on-time service in the 70s. And they made little effort at all to clean the graffiti. I'm not saying just let it stay. But I am saying that when there is no other trainset available, run the train that one time, then make sure it is replaced by another at the end of that run. Maybe even make an announcement on board explaining that that is what they are doing. A train running light is just as visible to people who want pictures of it as an occupied train anyway.

Unfortunately, the terms “cruel and unusual” are so vague that many smart ass lawyers call anything they want to, cruel and unusual if it benefits their clients. Even the death penalty is described as cruel and unusual in some places.
