A massive water-main break at Lawrence and Willoughby Streets in the early morning hours inundates the Dekalb Avenue station causing the suspension of all service between
Brooklyn and Manhattan via either the Manhattan Bridge or the Montague Street Tunnel.
Service over the bridge was restored in time for the PM rush the next day. Service through the tunnel was restored in the early morning hours of Wednesday, August 25.

About that 1965 water main break: Were those R-32's, R-27's and R-30's part of the same train, or were they each part of a different train of cars? I shudder to think that they were all intermixed in one train, not unlike the IRT "borgaschmords" so prevalent in the '70's and '80's . . .

They were to separate four cars trains. In 1965 the R-32's and R-27's stayed separate.

August 22, 1965 was a Sunday, so that explains the 4-car trains. Maybe it happened in the late evening or overnight also.

A few weeks before beginning seventh grade, I was enjoying a visit to my aunt, uncle, and cousins in Torrington, Connecticut, where I had the thrill of using a bicycle. One night, however, I was upstairs attempting to sleep while Uncle read downstairs, smoked his pipe, and listened to a music station that carried hourly headlines. Each hour I heard that buses replaced the V car on the Williamsbridge route.
---
In that era, the northern terminus was Gun Hill Road, falling short of Williamsbridge.

Joe: That's a great story. Its always good to hear from someone with personnal knowledge of these events. I you don't mind I am going to add that to the Almanac posting for that day.

That was four years before the Borgaschmord Train era.

Larry, my memories can be reprinted in any way, but often they cannot be trusted. Your almanac today told me the date when I had that enjoyable week in Torrington and heard the V car news repeated on the radio.

After the war, Dad did me the great favor of riding trolley lines under threat of abandonment. On one trip, the family rode the J car to Savin Rock and enjoyed the amusement park. I think we returned on the R. In that postwar era, the NYNH&H Railroad offered low one-day excursion fares.

The show must go on!

In case you're wondering what a borgaschmord is, it's an anagram (maybe butchering is a better word) of the word, smorgasbord. There was a series of commercials for Underwood Meat Spreads in the early 70s featuring a kid named Mason Reese. Underwood's slogan was, "It's like having a smorgasbord in a can," owing to the many different possibilities of serving those spreads. Well, Mason Reese gave it the old college try and would up saying, borgaschmord. A couple of kids around him busted out laughing.
