Elkeeper's Almanac for July 3rd. |

Posted by Elkeeper on Wed Jul 3 11:04:21 2019 Service on the BRT Broadway Ferry spur, between Marcy Ave and Broadway Ferry, officially ended at 12:01AM, July 3rd, 1916. Most non-rush hour service had been provided by single enclosed car #998. Two 3-car trains of gate cars provided rush hour service. Despite calls for el shuttle restoration and complaints of inadequate trolley service to Broadway Ferry, the tracks remained out of service, except for gate car layups, until 1927. Since it carried power cables from the Kent Ave Powerhouse, the elevated structure remained in place until demolition began on May 5th, 1941 by Harris Structural Steel. |

I mentioned about the narrow vestibule doors on #998 as one reason that more were not ordered.. Another factor might have been that the vestibule car looked too much like its IRT competitor! The Standards, "C" cars, Triplexes, and others had their doors more evenly placed, unlike the IRT, prior to their 1939 Worlds Fair cars. |

Actually, at the time 998 was built, that was state of the art for rapid transit design. However, at the time standard railroad coaches were being built to larger dimensions which the new dual contract subways were being built to accommodate. With this in mind, rather that restrict itself to the standard sized car of the period as used by the H&M and IRT, the opted to design what it perceived to be the largest car that would fit into its new subways hence the 67 ft steel. Had the BRT opted to remain with the smaller 998 sized, car the shape of NY’s transit system might have been a bit different. It certainly would have made joint operation of the Astoria and Flushing lines a lot easier. |

This 1910 photo is on the back page of, THE TRACKS OF NEW YORK, Number 2. The center turnback track for the B'way Ferry shuttle, over Keap Street, had to be removed for the express track in 1916. Keeping the shuttle would have caused potential problems at Marcy Ave with all of the trains crossing the WillyB. |

I would imagine heavy maintenance work on the Standards (truck change and the like) was also done at CIYD Main Shop, while routine maintenance on the Eastern Division Standards was done at DOYd (District Office Yard) known today as East New York Yard. Routine maintenance on the Standards assigned to CIYD based routes and the DTypes was assigned to CIYD barn.Just like today the main shop at CI and the barn are separate entities. Same goes for 207th St. |
