Sea Beach Train Looking Good

Posted by #4 SeaBeachFred on Sat Jun 15 19:57:38 2019

Just got back from New York on Friday and the highlight was, of course, riding my Sea Beach train and looking at all the improvements on the line----FINALLY AT LONG LAST. The stations on the Manhattan bound trains ran local in the open cuts stations as all of them have been reworked and the y look good. The Coney Island bound ones pretty much passed most of the stations past 59th street as rehabbing is still going on. Even those mini tunnels have been reworked and repainted. It was a pleasant site to see. I hope if they catch any assholes trying to graffiti those stations get a taste of some serious knuckle sandwiches and a few broken bones and teeth.

Hey Fred, a voice from the past, speaks !

You should have announced your Big Apple visit, some of us would loved to tag along.

Glad you like the rebirth of your Sea Beach line.

Wow Fred. Long time, no see.

Yes, many changes to the 104 year old line; "NTT" trains and the elimination of the 4th track N/B of Kings Highway, but all in all a nice line.

Fred, it's good to hear from you. When we last met up in New York some years ago, we rode the Sea Beach line during the period when it terminated at 86th Street in Brooklyn. I'm glad that "your" line has been rehabbed.

Look closer Fred, the water still leaks behind the new fancy walls at most stations. Puddles on the platform in many places. Mostly a cosmetic job if you ask me.

Liked it a lot......and about time, don't you think? I was impressed with what I saw and I will like it a lot better when all the work is completed. I took the trip with my wife LInda and it was a baseball tour that took us to Boston, Cooperstown and New York so I didn't know I would have time to meet up with any of my old rail fan buddies. As it turned out Linda wanted to shop in NY and I did have the time and I took advantage of it and rode my train and others, and also rode the Cyclone at Coney Island. They have really fixed CI up. It looks real nice now. About time on that too. Good to hear from you Bill.

Well it was worth seeing Steve but I got a kick in the pants when I tried to transfer from the 62nd St. West End Station downstairs to the Sea Beach line only to find out that repair work and closed the New Utrecht entrance to my train and forced me to walk a ways to catch up to the Sea Beach. Fortunately the guy in charge let me go through the door and not have to pay another $3.00 for the privilege of riding the "N" to Coney Island.

Well Lou, compared to what they were before the rebab work I probably was looking at it through roseate glasses. Hopefully they will notice those problems and rectify it. To be honest, just about anything was preferable to what those stations looked like before the work began. It used to piss me off royally to see some of the stations on the other BMT Lines looking spiffy while those on my favorite line looked more like Berlin and Tokyo did in 1945.

They're installing ADA elevators and other work at that end. There's a Metrocard transfer, but you have to walk all the way around to the fare controls at the opposite end of New Utrecht Ave station.

They fixed CI up, but I miss little things like the Astrotower and the walkway from the boardwalk to the West 8th St station. All gone.

The Sea Beach line still needs that bracing to prevent the walls from collapsing, so it's not that great.

It made perfect sense to take down the walkway - IF you were a business owner around the Coney Island terminal! After the new businesses moved into the terminal area, they started clamoring to take down the walkway, because people who were going to the beach were getting off at W 8th St and using the more convenient walkway. It didn't help that the walkway was dilapidated - the NY Aquarium paint was peeling and the side stairs were closed due to poor condition. The NY Aquarium didn't want to pay for repairing it, and the MTA didn't want to pay either. So one Sunday morning, a crew came by and removed the portion over Surf Ave, citing safety concerns (shades of the Thunderbolt). The remainder was closed off, and after the season was over, the remainder was demolished. The only evidence now is the bandshell-like entrance at the F train's uptown platform, which now goes nowhere. It took them a year? 2 years? before the city modified one of the boardwalk's entrances to better allow people to get to W 8th St, as a concession, instead of going through the Aquarium parking lot (PITA).

Google Maps still has pictures of it:

If they decide to make the C full length (600 ft), there probably wouldn't be enough full length R46's and R179's to completely fill out the A and C so they would have to keep a few 10-car R32's running on those lines until the R211's arrive.

Bill: I like a lot of the new cars, especially on the IRT. I do miss the old cars like the Lo-V's and the great Redbirds, not to mention the PCC's on the Newark City Subway. I miss my youth too but I can't get that back either. There's always something new and exciting on the transit scene and the one place that we all are going to is into the future.

PS Thanks again for keeping the memories alive with your calendars. This months issue has a full ten car train of Lo-V's on the White Plains Road Line. Now that was a class act.

Yup.
I KNOW the 'wonder what I'm gonna ride today' feeling is somewhat still there, but when you have a general idea that this particular line has x amount of these cars,or fitted out completely with said cars..

It's all good.
Still get the occasional ride in just to fan,or to do a non motor car day.
Still get a kick outta Any Rockaway trip.
Nothing can beat the R10s for that....but it's still worth doing anyday.

I wish. It still makes local stops at 45th and 53rd in both directions, at least until next month and possibly through the first quarter of 2020. Those two stops make a huge difference, especially southbound because the N is often held outside 36th for several minutes before switching to the local tracks.

That did happen once on my four jaunts on the Sea Beach, but the other three times there was no hold up whatsoever.....so Iguess I lucked out there. Waiting for trains to pull out of a station can really piss a rider off......like me. I didn't come 3,000 miles to sit my ass in a station.

That did happen once on my four jaunts on the Sea Beach, but the other three times there was no hold up whatsoever.....so Iguess I lucked out there. Waiting for trains to pull out of a station can really piss a rider off......like me. I didn't come 3,000 miles to sit my ass in a station.
