It still is, isn't it? What's the 2nd closest?

190th is very deep if you come in from above, not sideways.

Roosevelt Island is probably the farthest below sea level, and also quite far below street level.

Lex/63rd is way below street level, but more like 120 feet, not 180.

Hudson Yards, 72/2, and 86/2 are really deep too.

Is the reasoning for 34/HUD, 72/2 and 86/2 because of less of an impact on the neighborhood during construction or were there geological (schist/bedrock was so much deeper than in other spots)??

We all know Manhattan Schist is very good for a foundation to build on because it's much more stable than other types of building materials.

The 7 has to duck beneath the approaches to the Lincoln Tunnel as well as the tracks into Penn Station.

IINM the 2 Av line is more or less level from 72nd to 96th, but the street goes downhill.

Not to mention the demolished (and abandoned) 42nd Street lower level (used in "Ghost")

Thank as always!!! Very interesting entry for the 14th!! Several streetcar abandonments, including Castleton Avenue (today's S46) and Mount Vernon...

And that a set of Q cars could push an SIRT car (practically an A/B) overboard- wow!!!

I've never entered or exited at 191 (I have passed through it). I have entered/exited all the others...Roosevelt Island sure feels like the deepest of those. 86th/Second is damned steep!! Mrs. Main won't use the escalators- we have to use the ADA elevator- along with quite a few other folks!

It actually goes right through that lower level. You can get an idea where it is if you know where to look.

At 190th and 191st, the question is which street level to consider when figuring their depth. BTW, wouldn't the walk between 190th (A) and 191st (1) lower levels be shorter than that between the two 207th St. stations, or 207th (A) to 215th (1), as a substitute for the closed transfer at 168th? Closer to where the transfer had been, too. Did they not want to make people walk through the long tunnel between the trains and Broadway at 191st?

The new kid on the block on the other hand didn't know any better. He had to be taught a lesson and taken down.

The walking distance between 190th A and 191st 1 is equivalent to about 8 or 9 short NY City blocks. The walking distance between 207th A and 215th 1 is about 5 short city blocks. The walking distance between the 2 Dyckman stations is about 6 short city blocks.

When I started working for the TA back in 1970 I was introduced to a Road Car Inspector by the name of Joe Karp. He related the entire story to me. He was truly a nice guy and I'm so glad he wasn't fired for that infraction. Today I'm not so sure.
