They probably have as much layup space now as on the el between 168th and 160th Street on the middle track. I think 2 or 3 8-car consists.

The great doesn't age well either. The rust shows more with the green, especially when the green gets that bleached faded look.

Yes. They generally only like to keep SMEE trains there though. Now that they are down to 2 R32 and 3 or 4 R42 train sets, who knows.

Basically, all lines within the Eastern Division shared rolling stock.
The exception being the Original R40s stayed on the M and L lines, with Very few running in J/Z service.
However..the J did use mostly All of the R40m cars.

The 143 cars changed the dynamic...and and this continued with the 160/179s.
The new 211s 4 car sets will be Eastern Division cars used by the M and L routes eventually.

4 car R179's are new to the J line.

There will be no 4 car sets of R211's and they will not be used in the Eastern Division. Not needed.

You are mistaken.
Option 2 clearly states there will be 4 car set of R211s.
I read the report myself converning the procurement.
Clearly, these cars will be used on the L line.
They may not be needed now...but AFTER the tunnel work is done.

Interesting how that structure was rebuilt with (albeit modified) service maintained. They also claim that the new construction is how it avoided a complete meltdown during the fire underneath it a few years ago (somebody had an accident while re-fueling a portable generator)..

I think the eastern end of the Jamaica el was left unpainted from 1965 (or so) on, as they knew it was coming down. Because I can remember seeing the extant portion of that line with the beige color in the 1970s and 1980s.

Similarly, when there was still talk of keeping the Third Avenue El north of Fordham, they repainted it from there to Gun Hill Rd, in 1970. We all know how that worked out...

"Interesting how that structure was rebuilt with (albeit modified) service maintained"

It was done in slices, one track at a time west to east. The schedule was modified so service could be maintained with 3 tracks. Problems started when a train would crap out, then you'd have to go with 2 tracks.

As for a complete meltdown if the fire started under the old structure, one can only speculate how it would hold up. Depending on who you talk to, the old viaduct would have held up just fine.
It was simple in construction. basically steel, ballast and rail. The new viaduct has a lot of reinforced concrete for a roadbed complete with all that re-bar contained within.
Engineer speculation here (not me)...if the fire was any hotter, the re-bar might have warped due to the heat. If that happened, the concrete would crack & disaster could have been quite likely.

There have been occasional examples of highway bridge concrete rebar melting above heat of a burning oil tanker, requiring the bridge to be taken out of service for repair (or demolition and reconstruction).

I know of several examples where the burning oil tanker was on top of a rebar-and-concrete bridge, and there was zero structural damage to the bridge.

It seems to be one of those rare cases that we just live with in most cases of civil highway construction.

Almost all of them went through a basic cleanup phase beginning in late 1986 where the grafitti was removed, the doors were painted blue inside and out and temporary white on black signage installed (these were the first signs on the J to have the proper 121st St terminal to display).
