"Interesting how that structure was rebuilt with (albeit modified) service maintained"

It was done in slices, one track at a time west to east. The schedule was modified so service could be maintained with 3 tracks. Problems started when a train would crap out, then you'd have to go with 2 tracks.

As for a complete meltdown if the fire started under the old structure, one can only speculate how it would hold up. Depending on who you talk to, the old viaduct would have held up just fine.
It was simple in construction. basically steel, ballast and rail. The new viaduct has a lot of reinforced concrete for a roadbed complete with all that re-bar contained within.
Engineer speculation here (not me)...if the fire was any hotter, the re-bar might have warped due to the heat. If that happened, the concrete would crack & disaster could have been quite likely.
