Tuscarora Almanac – December 13, 2016 – The Book of Last Runs (Special Section)

It is with deep regret that we record the passing of (Selkirk) Mr. Kevin McAleavey (1951-2016).

He was a fine gentleman and a rail scholar and we miss his wit and wisdom. The coming winter will be made a little colder by his passing.

Farewell good friend and may a train of Arnines take you to your destination.

“And somewhere men are laughing and somewhere children shout, but there is no joy on sub-chat tonight, mighty Selkirk has bowed out”.

Larry, RedbirdR33

The R-10 car to be first repainted that way was #3331, but it was in 1965 when that happened. To whit...

R-10 #3331, 207th Street Yard, November 1965.

R-10 #3331, 207th Street Yard, November 1965.

R-10 #????, 80th Street-Hudson Street, IND "A" line, December 15, 1965.

R-10 #1840, 207th Street Yard, December 19, 1965.

I knew Unca Selkirk died but didn't know when.

There'll be a special round of mooing heard today in his honor.

I like the mercury vapor lamps attached to the building. In 1965, that was fairly new technology. They look like Westinghouse Silverliners...

Very interesting:

It's too bad Dr. Ronan insisted on everything being silver and "Ronan Blue" when he was MTA head, as the "Racing Stripes" were perfect.

I had the privilege of meeting Kev 16 years ago on Subtalk Day at Shoreline, along with his widow, Nancy. He was genuinely thrilled to be reunited with 1689, which he said he actually operated back in the day, and acted as though he'd found a long-lost toy. He still remembered the checklist of things to do when prepping a train (which breakers to throw in what sequence) and ran it as though he'd done so only the day before. I considered him a friend and still do. May he rest in peace.

On a brighter note, the racing stripe paint scheme is my all-time favorite. The R-10s looked fast in the scheme!

Was it a blueish green light they gave off?

Well, I've never seen those specific light units, and 1965 was 3 years before my birth....

BUT- generally speaking, mercury vapor lamps degrade over time rather than suddenly burn out. When new, their light is almost (not quite) pure white, and as they age, they get dim and green. They can last decades- but near the end, they're almost pure green, with some glare, but no meaningful illumination. So- I suppose the lights shown here, relatively new in '65- just before everything went to hell, were probably in use until the late 80s or early 90s. By then, they were probably quite green.

In 1999, I noticed a six-sided lamppost with a mercury bulb on a section of Attorney Street (near Grand Street) that had been closed to traffic for many years- I guess the light was installed just before that happened. It was still lighting every night, but was so degraded that it didn't even glare.

"Glare" means that a source of light is more prominent to the eye than what is being illuminated (ex: 200 Watt bulb in a small bathroom)

I recall as a young kid, taking a trip on the the 8th Avenue line heading uptown and seeing for the first time (we always rode the QB lines and would switch either at Roosevelt for the 7 or Queens Plaza for the EE to 59th St. and get on the Lex line) ot what I have since become to know as the R-10 in what I called at the time the World Fair colors. I remember being fascinated by the trains which were cool and the stations with the express/local and downtown/uptown set up.

It has been noted, by anonymous sources, that pigeons often leave a deposit on top of the light sensors, causing the lights to remain lit, and thus having a shorter life span.

I can believe that. The light I was referring to on the closed portion of Attorney Street turned on and off at appropriate times. It's gone now, but I estimate that it was 37-38 years old when I saw it- I think the street was closed in the early 60s as part of the redevelopment of the area.

I always wondered why the R-10's had no route lettering on their sides, like "A", "AA", "BB", etc. Yet, the cars classes that came before and after them did!
