Well, I've never seen those specific light units, and 1965 was 3 years before my birth....

BUT- generally speaking, mercury vapor lamps degrade over time rather than suddenly burn out. When new, their light is almost (not quite) pure white, and as they age, they get dim and green. They can last decades- but near the end, they're almost pure green, with some glare, but no meaningful illumination. So- I suppose the lights shown here, relatively new in '65- just before everything went to hell, were probably in use until the late 80s or early 90s. By then, they were probably quite green.

In 1999, I noticed a six-sided lamppost with a mercury bulb on a section of Attorney Street (near Grand Street) that had been closed to traffic for many years- I guess the light was installed just before that happened. It was still lighting every night, but was so degraded that it didn't even glare.

"Glare" means that a source of light is more prominent to the eye than what is being illuminated (ex: 200 Watt bulb in a small bathroom)
