Seriously? Amtrak can't be bothered to have diner cars on half its long-haul routes but some dead skell gets a 10-car luxury train all to himself?

George H. W. Bush, our 41st President, was not a skell.

And that 10 car train is also for his family and close friends.

I strongly disagree with your characterization.

George H. W. Bush, our 41st President...

Your President, perhaps. It's harder to make the case that he was ever mine.

...was not a skell.

Look, however you slice it, the man commit crimes against humanity. People died a lot younger than him, because of him. I'm not particularly attached to the "skell" term (I only used it because SubChatters seem to be fond of it), but you can't pretend he's a great guy just because he's no longer breathing.

And that 10 car train is also for his family and close friends.

That's still too much train. Where were the 10 cars for the friends and families of all the people he killed?

And how likely do you think it was that his son - an even more notorious criminal - was on that train instead of in prison where he belongs?

I strongly disagree with your characterization.

Yes, I'm well aware of the trend of never speaking ill of the dead, but I'm afraid I need to disagree with it. Scum don't stop being scum just because they start decomposing.

The train is UP's doing, it's a family connection. In the 1920's Mr Bush's father was a business partner with Mr Harriman of UP fame. Can I suggest trying some homework first.

Bush 41 did launch the first war with Iraq, so a fair number of US soldiers and many, many Iraqis died as a result of his commands.

However, the first Iraqi war, whether you agree with it or not, wasn't based on a lie. Iraq really had invaded and occupied Kuwait.

The first Gulf War was a coalition of 35 nations that Bush 41 assembled, had a defined purpose unlike Bush-43's war that was based on a lie, and then pulled out very quickly. We had 293 casualties.

Bush 41 also gave us ADA and stronger environmental laws. The latter prevented 2 million premature deaths.

He did it all with an opposition Congress that he worked well with.

One can argue that.

But anyone who does a solo skydive on his 85th birthday from 20K is OK with me. A guy who follows sixty years of annual solo skydives (he did a jump every year on his birthday) by jumping out of a helicopter at age ninety is well beyond OK.

Doing all that while being President Prudence B MildManners rather than today's OoohOoohLookitMeeeImaBigeeBig!11 celebutard ex-potusi, well, we're not getting any more like that. Yeah it's not a good precedent for the average blowhard prezidint, but I'm more than good with making a holiday for this one.

Lack of much of a domestic agenda and the recession from the S&L crisis lead to his defeat in 1992. But other than that, a very brave and honorable person who was not the least bit of a snob or a bigot, anda a good consensus builder, unlike the current creature residing in the Oval Office. He never went away on Thanksgiving or Xmas so that the Secret Service had more time with their own family.

What does that even mean?

I'm guessing it's part of your paranoid fantasy about enemies lurking behind every corner, since you desperately try to bring up World War 2 unprompted.

It's also a stellar example of projection, since just a scant decade ago, I was one of the only people here who actually fought for your right to railfan when King Bloomberg tried to ban subway photography, and I'm still spat on for it.

Don't forget his mishandling of the AIDS crisis, or his efforts at dismantling any infrastructure to protect us against the rich. Killing someone indirectly still kills them.

However, the first Iraqi war, whether you agree with it or not, wasn't based on a lie. Iraq really had invaded and occupied Kuwait.

Kinda sorta. Hussein was an American puppet who made sure to get permission from the US before he invaded Kuwait. As such, the war was utterly unnecessary, and Bush should have been forced to take responsibility for it.

I have no problem with giving him the funeral train. Such trains are a long tradition in our country.

It's a tradition very reminiscent of the ceremony Britain puts on for dead monarchs. Similarly, the typical inauguration is an analogous, if more subdued, counterpart to the typical British coronation.

It's a relic of our history— we were the first modern Western country to try making a democracy, and we did so in a fairly primitive era, so however forcefully we thought we were breaking away from monarchy, we couldn't help but shake a culture based on the celebrity of a single Ruler.

It's not just the ceremonies. Look at how presidents are treated as uniquely worthy of respect. Look at how presidents are credited or blamed for laws when laws are actually passed by Congress. Look at the turnout for presidential vs. midterm elections. Look at all the crazies in this very thread who think that even polite and relatively tepid criticism of a dead president is an unforgivable offense.

Ghosts of the British monarchy haunt our culture, even multiple centuries after we became independent.
